Good article on Swann in the Sunday Times

3 nil down were they and in process of being humiliated? As I said the circumstances in which he left were very poor and he'd have still been there sprinkerling away at the very end if we'd been 3 up.
Very weak IMO.
You’re guessing

Remember that it’s a job. And he has a family at home. If you were on a project overseas for months, builder let’s say, and your back gave up would you tell your wife and kids to hold on, but you’re watching your colleagues finish the project?

He was injured and been dropped. What was he meant to do. He couldn't even be third man. So he just hangs around the dressing room making jokes? I don't get the argument

Jonathan Trott bailed after the 1st Test citing stress, doesn't seem to get the same level of abuse.

The same as you're on the Hales stokes thread in how people would be reacting if it wasn't stokes. Is that ok for you to do though?
It's my opinion, simple as that.

Because he was ill.

Why would he get criticism?

That whole Trott thing was shameful like, anyone who has suffered any sort of mental health episode will tell you that every single case is different, the desperation to label something was crazy. That is when I made my mind up against Vaughan, really poor then, you never know what is going through someone's head. Its a dangerous game to start having ago

The same as other lads who were part of the squad and stick it out. You know as well as I do that if we'd been winning he'd have stuck it out.

Very true

You ignored my question mind
If you were a builder you wouldn't still be being paid. Swann was.

Totally agree with you regarding trott by the way.

I don't think he should at all, I'm just highlighting the hypocrisy. Trott and Swann both left the tour as both were unable to play, but one gets dogs abuse and one doesn't.

Sorry, yeah I agree. Swann wasn't going to play again in the tour, its normal for players to return home. It happens on every single one when a player gets an injury.

The only player I have ever seen stay was Hameed in India, when he watched the last game with his dad and brothers.

I honestly don't get the issue.

What good was he doing staying there? He couldn't play. I honestly don't get what you mean. Just stay as a cheerleader? Its normal protocol for the players to leave once injured in my experience watching cricket anyway

Swann went on that tour with an injury and declared himself fit, I don't blame him for this as the Ashes is the pinnacle and I think we'd all convince ourselves we were fit enough if it meant getting on the plane. However once he's made that decision he has to stick it out, it's no good all of sudden declaring yourself unfit because he's had his corky burst and we are being humped. He was going to be dropped and his ego wouldn't allow it to let the situation play out and announce it at series end, it sent a really bad message at a time we were already at a very low ebb.
It's no good comparing this to the likes of Simon Jones or Daren Gough before as this was an injury that he went in with knowing what could happen. I can't think of any other player doing what Swann did given the circumstances. As I said KP was lame but he at least stuck it out until the last rites were read.

Worst comparison ever.

No, and do what? Just hang around the dressing room making jokes?

Because he has mental health issues - of course he wont get the same level of abuse. Swann was fit enough to bowl in that match and would have been fit enough to bowl in the next if he hadn't been smacked to all corners. He said his elbow was letting him down towards the end of games - I never bought that he was just targeted and smashed and didn't like it.

I hope not as he's a right boring c@nt! Did all the other lads not involved have to hang around telling jokes as well? Didn't realise that was part of the gig for players not in first XI!
He made the choice to tour with his injury, he was going to be dropped as he'd been crap and his elbow issue was becoming more problematic. What be should've done was stay with the group, carry drinks do whatever and then make announcement at end of series. Things were bad enough to start with without him bailing halfway through.
