Harvey Weinstein

A bloke on the radio yesterday claimed this is all coming out now because Weinstein's career has waned. he no longer has the degree of influence he once held.
Bit like Cosby eh?
Drugging up the bewers and meeting them in his bathrobe for decades but nothing comes to light while he’s america’s dad.

His victims have nothing to lose anymore, that would be different to Cosby though, no? I'd imagine he had far less influence over people's careers, more like he had powerful friends protecting him maybe? Mind, I know next to nothing about either of them, or their respective careers.

The underlying problem here is how much some people are allowed to get away with and how much power they are allowed to have over people. There's this culture that we should let people who have wealth and power do whatever they want, as if there's no other viable way to do things and these abusive people are the only ones able to run industries and organisations and we ordinary weaklings need to just be their bitches.

What are people's opinions regarding the reports that apparently many many people in the profession knew all about his behaviour, many had heard stories, some had even told others about their experiences and one actor (can't remember who) even made a 'joke' / remark about it during an awards ceremony - which most of the people in the room recognised/ got?

I totally get that a less powerful victim will be anxious about reporting events of this nature and that he was a very powerful individual - albeit his power took a very rapid tumble once a couple or three people actually reported him - but his behaviour would appear to have been an 'open secret' amongst people who themselves are not without influence and credence. How can that be? The only explanation I can come up with is industry wide tacit acceptance.

People said the same about Jimmy Savile. The problem here is that unless you have actual proof, it's quite hard to do something about it. You can tell the police, but they need victims to talk to them, not just people who have heard the gossip. If you tell the world, it's slander unless you can prove it. So while I'm sure these people do receive some amount of protection from people in the industry, I think it is too easy to call out everyone in the industry.

OK. Good points.

It's quite concerning that apparent predators like this can 'hide in plain sight' for such a long long time until something - like death in Saviles case or a fall from economic power and influence apparently in Weinsteins case - creates the conditions where victims feel safe and/or empowered to tell their story.

Power corrupts - as the saying goes. Do we confer celebrities and people in the entertainment industry with a power far greater than their actual status and a safe haven for their evil to prosper?

The combination of the corrupt powerful individual placed alongside the presence of vulnerability and the groupthink compliance of bystanders.

I'm just chuntering now.

There needs to be some balance here

Maybe not on this creep but some women will shag who they want to to get to the top

There are so many issues and problems to solve, Hollywood A listers are not top of my agenda like

Hearing some of the accounts you have to question some of these women keeping quiet, seemingly to make sure they aren't hurt financially, instead of going to be police.

Also bizarre how they "find themselves in his hotel room" he must have a teleporter
Reading through various threads, you have to question the people that are immediately looking at ways to question the victims.

But do they only get away with it because people allow them to?

I've been in jobs where management wanted me to take on extra responsibility for free as a 'development opportunity'. I told them to go fuck themselves in nicer terms, well sometimes not. I'm not going to be anyone's bitch, ever. And that will halt career progression I'm sure but at least I still have my dignity intact.

The guy sounds like a disgusting monster and I am not blaming any of these women that got put into positions with him (that's completely on him) but I do have to ask why it has taken so long for it to come out and why people would put up with it in fear of their careers.

The reason is mainly that if you're an actor you're either successful or you're waiting tables. The ratio of jobs to people who want those jobs is almost impossible, and the factors that determine your employability or appeal are hard to measure. This places a great deal of power in the hands of a very small number of people who represent a little club who scratch each other's backs and owe each other favours. I hear a lot of accounts of more regular jobs where the pressure not to rock the boat and piss off the people at the top is pretty high. In the film and television industry it IS the industry. Every single one of those women has been told, by Weinstein and then by other people talking them out of taking action, that it will harm their careers if they speak out. And it's either go along with that or give up that career altogether.
