Durham CCC 2018

Looking something like:
Latham, Steel, 2 from Clark/Burnham/Smith, Collingwood, Pringle, Poynter/Richardson, 3 from Carse/Weighell/McCarthy/Potts, Rushworth.
Add in Trevaskis and Harding.
Gidman + another bowler and we're sorted for a potential promotion push.

Heard a rumour Harding has also been released. Sorry I cannot confirm it as I'm currently in Cyprus on holiday.

Im glad you posted this thread mind Trundler, with all the comings and goings we've already seen - it's meant quite a few individual player threads and as such much of the debate has been lost amongst them all.

Overall, I'm feeling really positive about 2018. I suppose what helps is the knowledge we can't get relegated. The other thing is we've got nothing to lose, so we can look forward to seeing how our new team goes and also the progress of what looks to be a vastly youthful side.

The loss of Jennings, Coughlin and Onions hasn't hit me with the same impact that I'd have expected. I don't know quite why, but definitely with Jennings and Coughlin I don't think they'll be a massive miss. I reckon both players owed us more loyalty than they showed, but they've both done very little this season and very little for us full stop when you really think about it (with the obvious exception of Jennings 2016). Take away that bumper year for Jennings and we'd all be suggesting he be released anyway.

Bunny is a club legend, no doubt about that, but his best years are past him, I'd have rather seen him retire with us, but I can't see him playing much longer than another season anyway.

The players we've signed are very shrewd bits of business and the rise of some unheralded players has been a very pleasant surprise and a massive bonus for us. Steel, Clark and Potts for example have been phenomenal. I also think we'll see more new faces. I actually feel Beefy will be working on getting a strike bowler (at the very least).

Some were joking earlier on that we may not have enough players left to field a side, but in actual fact I believe we've got just as much depth as we had starting this year, if not more when you consider the progress and improvement seen from lads we expected nowt from.

I posted my team above, but there's plenty of replacements for those lads. So I do genuinely think we'll make a better fist of it next year, to what we have this year. If we get a strike bowler in, to compliment Rushy, I'd even stick my neck out and say we'll push for promotion.

Well one thing is for sure With all the departures Durham have a few quid spare to sign a couple more players at least.
From what I can make out from the budget at the start of this season (which the club confirmed at a members meeting was within the ECB sanction) they have added Steele (upgrade from development to full contract) Potts on a 3 year deal, Harte on a development contract and now Smith returns. The 3 lads who recently signed 1 year deals will probably be on the same money they where already on.
Iam sure the people making the decisions on recruitment for 2018 are already fully aware of all the players from other counties who are available and agents will have contacted them about overseas players who have right passport to play domestic cricket as an Englishman.
Its up to them to make the right choices which ever direction they go in. Oh for another Benkenstein!

Latham
Steel
Smith
Clark
Collingwood
Burnham
Richardson
Carse
Weighell
Potts
Rushworth

might need pringle in there anarl, between him and burnham I guess for that spot at 6. although smith & steel can bowl spin when required.

reckon poynter has a shot at taking the gloves.

another year into the bones of Collingwood might see him rested more often or drop a format or two?

looks right otherwise

Nowhere near good enough for promotion that mate

It's a solid side n we will progress from this year

he did say add gidman and another bowler for a promotion push.

wonder what dale steyn is up to

I think it's decent but will be better sides

We just need to rebuild and be consistent

Basically need a new spine of experience then bring through next lot of local talent

I feel we are back to the stage we were when MDV and Benk came in

Which is sad

But we kicked on from there and went on to win things. It's all part of the cycle of life in a County Club. Not helped by the actions of the ECB mind you.

Without doubt we need at least more 2 signings which are nailed on first teamers.
With the money Durham are saving from the players leaving they can afford them. They can then also look for some promising players who do not have a county and offer them the development contracts as they did this season with Steele and Harte.

not sure I agree there, assuming gidman is true another two would push the likes of clark, burnham, pringle, potts, weighell out of the first team

assuming Brandon's prediction is right
Latham
Steel
Smith
Clark
Collingwood
Burnham
Richardson
Carse
Weighell
Potts
Rushworth

then gidman pushes clark or burnham out, pringle already on the outside.. unless we are going to have the likes of clark, burnham weighell focus on white ball...

I mean I'm all for having a very strong side and more variety between our county & list a teams but not sure we'll be doing this

I know that what I'm saying but we are back to that, we probably need a few kolpaks

I love the idea of promoting our own but that team lacks an opening bowler and a spinner. Carse,Weighell and Potts are good young players at different stages of their development but I don't think they have got 50 championship wickets between them. Also we can't over bowl them even if they do perform as they will just breakdown. I honestly believe a quality opening bowler is a must for the championship side next season.
