The players have been able to do it for years now, i wouldnt say its the end, but its always risky for the player to do it. One bad tackle and sanchez could be out for a year with no wages

Is this the end for transfer fee's between club's?

Players letting their contact's run down.

Canny eh.

Certainly think it'll happen more and more. Last season I remember thinking it was unlikely that Defoe would move in January, if they've already paid £8m or whatever to us West Ham would have less to pay as a signing on fee. Might as well hang on, see his contract out and then ask for as much as he can. If someone like West Ham are happy to pay £8m for him they won't care if it goes to the player or to another club (actually they'd probably rather keep the money away from a competitor) so it's not as if they'd turn him down over it (and if they do he'd just go to Bournemouth!).

Bit different if players still have a few years left though, the chance for an immediate pay rise might be too much to resist, rather than hanging on for 3 years or whatever

IIRC a player can 'buy' out the last year of his contract by paying 12 months salary to his club which makes him a free agent.

arse should never have let it get down to his last 12 months of contract. should have peddled him last summer if he was unwilling to extend his contract.

Be funny to see him signing on like

Makes as much financial sense for the club to keep a hold of their star players rather than lose them to a rival. By the time they've spent a fortune on an replacement they're barely better off, often weaker talent wise

Not quite sure I understand your post tbh. Arsenal could have sold him for about £60m and it would cost them about that the replace him, so I agree they'd be no better off and the player they get might not be as effective. But holding onto him, although giving them use of him for an extra season, now means they'll get nothing for him and still, unless there's another shit hot free agent going around, have to spend £60m to replace him. Unless he's going to single handedly win them a major trophy you'd think they'd have been better off selling him, rather than effectively paying about £60m to have him for one more season

It's not a popular opinion, but I think players should be able to move much more freely anyway.

Yes they sign contracts for x years, but we all sign contracts with our employers, and we all leave if a better opportunity comes along.

There should be one summer transfer window per year where clubs can register new players, and players should be free to sign for whoever wants them in that period.

If there is to be compensation, it should simply be a case of buying out the remaining value of the contract. So if you have 2 years left of a £100k per week contract, the fee would be £10m.

It would take so much of the guesswork, hassle and acrimony out of the whole business.

Oxlade-Chamberlain going for £35m with a year left on his contract tells us there will still be transfer fee's and all players won't let it run out.

Depends on how good he is tbh. If Coutinho makes or breaks Liverpool winning or even just qualifying for the champions league he's probably worth more to them than the money in the bank. You also know what you're getting with him. His replacement could be abysmal so you've not only lost your best player but gained a shite one and you're financially no better off. There's also the chance he'll fancy hanging around after all. That's an extreme example obviously

So long as all clubs were capped wage wise I'd agree. You'd only see the rich getting richer otherwise and champions league etc being even more of a closed shop

I'm sure I read a player in Spain bought out his contract in the summer so he could move to Villarreal which I thought was a bit weird but then I thought I bet he got that back as a signing on fee meaning the player and his new club have gotten a better deal and the players previous club has missed out

Pablo Fornals. Paid his own release clause fee to secure a move to Villareal from Malaga.
