RR What the papers say: 'Moyes feigned intent to stay & players rebelled over cancelled Xmas bash'

It's well established that Moyes is an absolute whopper

But a squad this mentally fucked doesn't just happen overnight, it takes years of careful underfunding and chopping and changing their managers, coaches and playing styles

We went from DiCanio's attempts at a pressing style to "South America in Sunderland" with Poyet

From total football with Big Dick to Big Sam's total hoofball

Then to Moyes' defensive wankery which must be f***ing soul destroying if you're a professional footballer

Short is ultimately to blame for all of this

You could tell he didn t want to be here.
At least he's had the decency to resign without compo a la Strachan at Boro.
The players tho' (well not all) are a f***ing disgrace.
Just hope they get cleared out and go on to have shit careers esp that twat Kone.

Sam had a better squad though. Kone and Kaboul both playing well. Kirchoff and Catts fit most of the time.

Its a huge difference.
What Moyes failed to do, which BSA did, was to spend limited funds wisely.
Catts was hardly fit under Sam man

Moyes came in and from the off cited that the players weren't good enough, he went on to buy more players but warned that they wouldn't improve the squad???....In any walk of life, if your boss is continually telling you that you are shit then you are not going to put the effort in.

The bloke keeps on repeating his Prem league numbers and that tells you he believes he is a top manager yet everything he's done since joining Sunderland tells you otherwise.

It's seems neither side come out smelling a roses. Questions have to asked about Moyes and his man-management style. That's 3 jobs in 4 years he has lost the dressing in quick time. You have to ask how Allardyce got a tune out of this squad. He was critical of them too, even telling them they were unfit and had to listen to him. I think Moyes went in here with the notion that we weren't any good and he was the one to sort us a out rather than building on what Allardyce felt.

'His squad were incapable of completing even the most basic of training drills' - This reminds of him shown Vidic and Ferdinand videos of Phil Jagielka and telling them to watch how he defends. That must have pissed them off to no end!
I forgot about that. I bet he did similar with our lot. Probably got Rose, and Januzi to show them their skills, having learnt them at the might Man U.

'And Moyes soon realised funds were not so freely available when, to his annoyance, his attempts to sign Watford’s Troy Deeney and Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa were blocked.'

Didn't Watford turn down a bid of circa £32m from Leicester for him in the summer? Nee wonder his attempt to sign him was blocked, that's 2 seasons transfer budget.

If the football we played under Allardyce was hoofball I'll take that any day. Fastet, attacking and organised. Hoofball is what we've endured this season, a desperate punt to the opposition, stand and watch then chase back galfheartedly. We weren't Barcelona under Sam but it was nowhere near the reductive slur of hoofball. Moyes had a poor hand to play with but even given that he was dire. No tactics, shit substitutions, undermined morale, told everyone they weren't good enough even before they got her c.f. January transfer quotes. Aye he won't have benn given much money for next season but to make out he was laying down the law and that he is somehow above us is plain old shite. He went because almost everyone saw through him and his "I usec to be brilliant" waffling.

my own view...

a struggling side should first and foremost be hard to score against, the old peter reid adage of 'try to nick one on the break' was meant for teams like sunderland, not so much about winning but getting away from the losing mentality, therefore, keeping the defence from the previous season should have been paramount.

kaboul wanted away but the club should have asked him to stay until the next window to give time for a replacement to be found and to 'bed in'.

mvilla was the main reason (imho) that the defence became more solid, although many wondered what he actually contributed others could see the work he was doing off the ball, covering passes, tracking players, stopping runs etc and should have been added to the squad rather than trying to get him on the cheap.

yedlin, well the jury is still out on him i guess but the lad that finished the season was a good improvement on the lad that began it, besides, who else did we have for right back?

with the back five sorted then the club could have invested more into the midfield and looked at alternatives/back up for striker...with the right players i honestly think borini and khazri would have looked a damn sight better than they have done and defoe would have been given far better service from them.

moyes/short made some diabolical decisions during those first two or three weeks which ultimately wrecked the club, from then on we were always going to struggle although no one could predict the injuries i have wondered if all of them were 'real' injuries or just players not wanting to be part of that team.

Forgot him.
So yeh, our first choice centre backs and midfield 3 were basically not there at the start of the season.

And they were not replaced properly.

*Kone doesn't count, he didn't give a shite anymore

I lose track of how often he's injured. I can only count with my fingers.
Get an abacus

Blame the players, the manager, the owner and whoever you like but competently run this club should be comfortably mid table in the Prem.
And that's all we want. No illusion of grandeur just the ability to not be in a relegation fight every year, win a few games, score a few goals and a cup run now and again. We now can't compete with Bournemouth, watford, burnley, Swansea, etc. no disrespect to them but we should be able to compete against these clubs. Keane and Quinn got us back in a good place. Short has took us painfully backward over 10 years, ignoring the warning signs and left us worse than when Murray sold the club.

"His squad were incapable of completing even the most basic of training drills".

Where did this snippet come from? Moyes himself is my bet which is why I would take it with a rather large dose of salt.

If it's true what on earth does it say about the coaching staff and their motivation?

Can well believe this

Not sure I believe this
To be fair, I remember seeing some twitter footage of an open training session that got me seriously worried months ago as players were making multiple mistakes, and Moyes was just clapping them on as if it was good enough. If you train badly, you ingrain bad habits.

It was written off by many at the time as being taken out of context. Perhaps in hindsight it was actually indicative of the scale of the problems we faced.

IMO, "His squad were incapable of completing even the most basic of training drills", really means "His squad were incapable of completing his baffling training drills".

Whoever takes over next should give all our ex managers of the last 4 years a ring and ask their opinion on which players cause the most problems then have Short release them from the club if we can't sell them.

It's people the likes of cattermole, oshea, Larsson the cancer that's run through your club...cut these fuckers out once and for all and start again
