I would have thought that the dementia risk from heading is lower now than in the past. The cases like Jeff Astle, which I'm not making light of, by the way, are from players who had to deal with the old-style ball which absorbed water and became significantly heavier as a game progressed if the pitch was remotely damp. Anyone who was playing even at school in the 60's will know all about that. What we don't know is the extent to which that risk has been reduced or not by the newer synthetic balls that are used now. Players like Shearer taking these tests can only be a good thing. We also need the generations before that - the likes of Dave Watson, Vic Halom or Gary Bennett who did a lot of heading - to come forward as well. The more data the medics have, the better we can understand what heading is doing to players' brains.

After years of Saturday and Sunday football mainly as a centre back fighting to get my head on everything I have to say waking up with a headache the following days I thought I might have cause for concern. The lads pointed out that it may have been the excessive drinking afterwards.

I miss battles on the pitch and winning headers.

I get dementia or alzheimers and im doing what that law lord judge did in the papers today.....by my own hand.......

Also if i start to feel any affinity to newcastle

Anyone seen the film 'Concussion' ? I found it a bit of an eyeopener about the link between sport and damage to the brain. Got to say, respect to Shearer for raising the profile of the issue. If it helps make the game safer for those playing, especially kids, then its a great move. Its one of those things that goes beyond sporting affinities

Good on him. We need to raise awareness of this - its the biggest killer now, more than heart disease and cancer!

No need for jokes on this one - its a serious issue.
Part of that is that we're better at treating the old big killers so something else gets us.

Fingers crossed for Shearer, no piss taking mag jokes from me.

Well hope he doesn't have it, it's such a horrible disease as has been pointed out, wouldn't wish it on anyone. Although I hope they don't find a correlation between heading the ball and dementia for other reasons, if they do find one they might remove heading from the game or other such measures.
Well they removed tackling from the game so I'm sure stopping players heading the ball won't come hard.

Incorrect, you can still tackle, you just have to tackle with one foot, no studs showing and have given two months notice of impending tackle in the form of a presentation where all parties are present. I believe that is the new FIFA rules, but I could be wrong mind.

David Cassidy has revealed that he has it :*(
all that football he played in the 70s.

If heading a ball was proved to be an issue and therefore removed from football, health and safety will be straight on to American Football, Rugby and especially Boxing, to name a few sports.
It's not really "health and safety" though is it, it's medical advise. They don't head a lot of balls in american football anyway.

Can you get dementia in your elbows? His took some battering when he was smashing them off peoples faces.

Dirty kernt he was ( seriously hope he's ok though :) )

No but they have massive impacts including to the head. They've been assessing it for a while.

.....and it is about people's health and safety.
