Sell to buy: PVA

His attacking threat constantly leaves us wide open like I've never seen before. Opposition teams know this. He makes little effort to get back. I agree he's useful going forward but the liabilities far outweigh the positives for me. Use some of the money to buy a proper left back rather than the makeshift ones we've had for years.
This.

And the rest on Snodgrass.

If we are going to have any chance of getting out of this mess, we will need to start keeping clean sheets a lot more often than we are. PVA offers something going forward, but has probably been at fault for more of the goals we've conceded than any other player over the past two years.

I've no problem at all with a decision to sell him. If the fee of £9m - £12m is correct, I'd go as far as to say that turning it down would have been borderline negligence.

Face facts. No player who is any good whatsoever will join us. Even young championship players will smell the stench of decay and decline emanating from the SOL and will run a mile.

So if we sell anyone for decent money we won't get an even comparable replacement and it will go into the coffers to offset debt.
I believe if we'd been mid table and go
ing reasonably Mvilla would probably have come but with the players available in August it was always likely we'd be in the shit by January. Makes the decision not to find the money to buy him last June all the more ridiculous as are the posters who backed the club in this folly.

It's going to finish costing Idiot Ellis a lot more than the 8m buyout he refused to stump up.

I'm ok w/ the agreed fee of £12M but time is ticking... January is quickly coming to an end. Push this deal through now w/ at least a chance to reinvest or keep him. Becoming painfully obvious he will be sold w/ none of the funds being used.

Daft though unless a deal with someone else is already agreed.

Reason? If a club know we're desperate, which we will be if PVA is sold then they'll just hike up the fee and the player will increase their demands.
We must have another left back lined up, surely !!

My reason for suggesting Buttner.
Good call tbf

I'm sure Alex Buttner wouldn't be too expensive. Aged 27 and currently playing for Vitesse. I always thought he was a decent, old fashioned left back and played well against us for Man Utd.

I'm gutted at the price for PVA and gutted where he is going, however, I wish you were head of recruitment as I'd have Buttner here in a heartbeat. That would certainly soften the blow.

Wonder if Chelsea are owed anything for sell on.

I'd imagine not. I get the impression that's more common with younger players as teams are anxious they might go for much higher fees in the future. Djilobodji is 28, doubt they'd expect much of a windfall from him. I also get the impression it's the smaller clubs that tend to ask for a sell on, bigger clubs normally just want the cash or, if the player is particularly promising, they may ask for a buy back clause to prevent a Pogba type situation. Mind, this is Sunderland so nothing would surprise me

It's going to be a riot watching these two, then Love when Billy is crocked

 He was terrible at United

I'm not sure this is going to happen it's one if the things that worries me. We have a track record of replacing players with worse. We can't even replace Bardsley! That are we're selling to a direct rival.
