My earliest memory of anything SAFC related was being taught the names by my mother of the Sunderland players that won the Cup in 1937.

Probably one of my earliest memories as I was about 3.

Along with all the usual nursery rhymes, they were legends.

The Bear - he was immense :-D
I remember we played at Brighton circa 1978 and the BHA lads were helped out by a few Hells Angels. The Bear and the Vauxies lads kicked fuck out of them in the corner.

football violence went with the territory and for anyone who wasnt there it was out of place with today's game, but it was what it was.

Wonderful stuff.

I remember we played Oldham at home in the late 1970's or so and me and mate, as usual went to the paper shop at the top of ropery Lane to get the Echo. We stared in disbelief as the official crowd was given as less than 20k.

the gates declared were always lower than expected. There was about 9,000 seats at Roker and they were pretty much full up until the mid 80's with most of the crowd standing yet the declared gate was always around 24,000 yet when an all ticket game came along there didn't seem to be many more in yet the gate went up to 40,000 plus.

had to fight he was too fat to run

got caught down Boro one season, fuckin hell on for well over a hour

wasnt the hardest but always "showed"

Why?

Erm cos we got three bears.............. :-D

They got a pasting, just as Tottenham did too, when they were in the RE in good numbers in the late 1970's ;)

There's a friend of mine who used to follow Spurs home and away in the 70's and 80's. They went up to Roker the season after they were relegated and their 'firm' took it upon themselves to take home ends, put on red noses, and have their pic taken as evidence.

They were sifting through them the other month, chuckling at these ridiculous pissed up slobs in the home end at Field Mill and the like, when they realised they could only see 20 pics. They ummed and ahhhed and finally realised that Roker Park was the missing photo. "Why's that?" I asked. "We didn't stay in there long enough to get our noses out of our pockets, let alone take a f***ing picture!" came the wry response.

Legends indeed. Book coming out about them all in September 2009 - Total Football Sunderland AFC 1935 to 1937.

Even Bill Shankly waxed lyrical about them.

My first game was v Wolves in 1970. I know we won 2-1 with about 15K at the game. Can't remember much but I'm sure Bobby Gould played for Wolves that game. Anyone confirm?

As a senior oldie, followed the lads for 53 years, I think our own board would be a big mistake because we get ..............................Stubber!

Not linked to this but didn't one of the supporters busses get shot at by some Hells Angels one year.

Spurs, MOTD when the horses came on the pitch?

The Tottenham lads went in the RE and were chased out, mainly by the lads from Fencehouses, Glendenning and Mally Patterson's lads.

the cockneys had sheepskins on but had tabs stubbed out on them as SAFC worked their tickets and utlimately paid them off.

They didn't hang around too much outside the ground either, I remember

I remember the lad who had nicked those old hand written British Rail tickets you used to get from Travel Agents. He used to fill them in wherever we were going and sell them off. f***ing hundreds of us on a train to Kings X with the date as 12th Febuary.

Not sure but I remember the legend of John Henry (The Bear's mate) at Plymouth/.Portsmouth, where he got chased into a garden, broke into the shed and in self defence started battering everyone with a garden shovel.

Back way back when if you got on MOTD it was a special occasion - now its 2 a penny.

Far too young to post on this thread but I remember seeing somewhere where the local vicars used to get quizzed days before a game. Apparently if you could work out where 'songs of praise' was being filmed on Sunday the most local match to that was on MOTD Saturday - one journey for the BBC cameras;)
