The Fishing Thread

The glorious 16th ls looming.🎣
Did you ever read or have a copy of MrCrabtree’s fishing book?
It was my go to as a kid. I definitely have it in the loft. Used to look at those illustrations and think of them whilst fishing the mid Thames in search of the species they were targeting.
I did have a picture book of angling, was that Mr Crabtree,a bloke and a kid?I lived on the bank of the wear so my favourite fishing author was Hugh Falkus, his target species was sea-trout,I think the wear still is the best river in England for them, you used to sit on the riverbank in the dark and listen to the salmon jumping.
Yeah using lures. I love topwaters, favourites being either the Patchinko or my Yo-zuri popper (which are discontinued now). If the waters coloured, I'll be using softbaits
Yo-Zuri I remember it was Harris Angling who first imported them, they did an incredible full colour Lure catalogue 20 odd years ago.

Always great to see how you Salty lads are doing. Keep posting mate and tight lines.
Slim pickings round these parts untill the summer species arrive in numbers.

The winter cod are long gone and those days freezing catching whiting every cast too.

I have a bag full of lures and some light braid (J Braid) loaded on one of my smaller fixed spool reels and I’m getting out there next week.

But I’m going to hedge my bets and take some light tackle and some bait.

I’ll stick the bait out then work the lures.

Loved that book as a kid, unfortunately my copy is long gone 😥

It was magical.
You’ve made me think about finding it. I also have 4 completed binders of the fisherman’s handbook in mint condition in the loft.
Always makes you smile when you look back at the methods adopted at the time and where angling is now.

Talk about freezing.
We have 18 blokes down from Norwich today and tomorrow fishing the reservoir in a match.

Watched one fall in the water this Morning as his front platform leg went down the next step. It was slow motion watching him land in the water with platform, rods the lot following him in.
The match hadn’t started at that point. On a positive he didn’t lose any gear and got out.
Then the piss taking started 🤣🎣

just back from a holiday where there was fair few small steams that I couldnt really get into because of the fly rod....they were probably less than 15 to 20 feet across and had loads of foliage so could really get a cast going to present a fly

so just bought a cheap tenkara rod to give that a go, packs up tiny, no casting as such and allows to drift a fly or nymph really easyily, will be ideal as a backpack rod If I am out anywhere , I am only chasing small fish in these sorts of streams

Go dig it out mate, wish I still had mine.
I've pretty much gone full circle nowadays. Haven't got to fish as much as I'd like the past year or so but when I do I'm happy to travel light and just plonk a quill float down the margins using a centre pin 🙂

Get down that Kennet. Unfortunately Otters and pollution like all of our Rivers are a shadow of what they were.

Busy afternoon.

Cooling down ready for the freezer. This paste has caught me most of my Chub and Barbel. Only challenge is where you have crayfish as it’s too soft to stay on a hair rig.
Will be using these on the Hampshire Avon over pellets at the end of the month.
Nobody in the house except me and the dog thus can stink it out.

Some wonderful fish, meat and yeast combinations.🎣

Is that what you coarse lads call ground baiting?

No mate. These are loose fed with one on a hook and pellets fed over the top.
Ground baiting is more about powdered mixes, adding water at the bank and mixing it up, either adding to a open end folder or “balling” it out where you are fishing or a combination of both.🎣

Feeder not Folder.
I use a hair rig.

Had a great day out over Kirkcudbright yesterday. Worked out I'd never been over there since the early 90's, used to be up there every other weekend from spring to late summer fishing the matches there, so it was good to retrace my steps.

Got there just before low water so tried a bit crabbing. The mark I used to go to now has a load of traps there and there was a local emptying them - lets just say he was less than impressed to see me! Managed to get a dozen or so out of the rocks and weed, there were loads not doing anything though, maybe another week and they should start. Went over to Brighouse to see if there were any there, but the place has been ruined by people pulling rocks over and not putting them back.

Main purpose of the trip was to recce some Bass marks. Unfortunately, the SW wind put paid to the mark I had my eye on as there was good sea running. Did find another mark though that did have some potential, so may be worth heading over in a month or so.

Few pics anyway

Stunning Mate.🎣

When you go Sea Fishing apart from a rod licence do you just rock up and fish?
Is there anything like permits, day tickets etc. I can understand if you are on a boat then it’s going to cost.

This time of year it’s expensive for me as buy a rod licence (going for a 3 rod this season only for the Winter Pike Fishing) then I buy 3 different venue permits.
Get the local reservoir free as I am the bailiff (jobsworth 🤣) and that saves me £10 a session.

Starting to look forward to the glorious 16th of June.🎣

Fishing in the sea is free. Boats you pay for unless you are on a friends boat.

Bait can be expensive crab, worm etc all have to be collected and it’s hard work.

Lures start at a couple of quid and go upwards.

Remember digging up Rag Worm once when I went sea fishing as a kid.

No rod licence mate, biggest expense is normally bait. Up in the north east that means paying a tackle shop, or petrol/diesel to travel to collect it cos everywhere local has been wiped out.

For most anglers it means buying it. Digging worm is back breaking work.

Some people stick tyres down in the river to get peeler crab. I’ve never done it myself but I’ve heard the stories about people robbing other people’s tyres and being dealt swift justice.

Yeah, unwritten rule not to raid other people's traps. Used to have my own in the wear but gave them up in the end cos of work.

Still like getting my own bait though, but now I'm 60, I ache for about a month afterwards.

Used to be loads of tyre crab traps in the slek below clatchy rock,we never checked them as kids,as you said unwritten rule.

I always have a stock of frozen bait in the fridge. Cart, Bluey, mackerel, frozen blacks, mussel and Squid so I can go out anytime.

Sometimes shops selling bait are closed some days during the week or don’t have any fresh bait.

However we are approaching my favourite time of year. Lure fishing.

Waders on, bass vest and a handful of lures, carry everything you need on you so you can be more mobile and you are not lugging a seat box around.

Fished North Withernsea today after Smoothies, Rays and Bass

No Bass or Rays, but got 4 Smoothies, best about 7-8lb. They don't have move when you hook them

Got 2 (including the biggest) on half a squid and a tiny quarter of Crab (after being told by the local tackle shop), and two on half a small crab.

No other bites, got soaked for an hour but it was great day out.
