How the Europa League works

Just because it confused the shit out of me yesterday

We’ve qualified for the League phase (as I understand it).

That means we go straight into the 36 team League along with the other 35 teams who either automatically qualified or who came through the qualifying playoff.

The League phase consists of 4 home and 4 away games for every club in it.

There are 4 pots of teams and we will be drawn against 2 teams from each pot which make up our 8 games.

We can’t be drawn against another English side in the league phase but we can in the knockout phase if we get there.

After 8 games the top 8 in the League go straight to the knockout phase.

Teams from 9th to 24th then go into a two legged playoff to determine the other 8 teams to go to the knockout phase.

Teams finishing 9th to 16th are “seeded” which means they get home advantage in the second leg of their playoff.

Teams finishing 25th to 36th are out of all European football for the season.

Once that’s done, it’s then a straight two legged knockout event until the final.

So we’re guaranteed at least 8 European games next season.

Last season Brann made the playoffs in 24th place on 9 points.

Roma finished 8th on 16 points as a guide.
Well said.

That's not true

We'd have to play either 14 or 16 to reach the final. It's 12-14 in the Conference League too so not sure where you've pulled 11 from.

I'd be buzzing if we get to play more than 8. Be gutting to not make the top 24 like!!!
Some people probably don't know that the Conference is not guaranteed League phase like the Europa. Getting to the final in both competitions is still 14 games (16 if going into League phase playoffs for last 16) but it works a little differently.

The Europa, like Champions is straight into League phase of 8 games, but the Conference starts with a 2 legged playoff in August and goes into a League phase of just 6 games. Finishing in 9th to 24th gets the 2 extra games in the playoffs for the last 16 knockout rounds.

A team in the Conference (Brighton next season) could well only play just 2 games if they get beat in the initial playoffs. Palace got through 1-0 on aggregate beating Fredrikstad but it was only 1-0 over the 2 legs.

Well this is exciting. League phase draw was made on 29th August this season. That’ll be something new to look forward to.

It's the 28th this August for the draw.

3 qualifying rounds, the first of which is drawn on the 16th June and the first games are the 9th July. It looks like the last of the 3rd round qualifiers are the 27th Aug the day before the group draw

According to the forest fans, the draw is made on the 28th which shows you which teams you'll play home and away , but it isn't sorted into the correct order for another 3 days.

So you'll know our 4 away opponents, but could be any of the 8 Thursdays, until it's finalised

You've actually managed to make getting 7th even better now for me

Thanks for the reminder as forgot all about that potential banana skin play-off!!!

Doesn't need explaining, we've qualified 😉

This is where we're at now

Aye.

Pots as things stand...

Pot 1
(9) Germany Bayer Leverkusen CC: 105.000
(25) Italy Juventus CC: 72.250
(30) Italy Milan CC: 66.000

Pot 1/2
(35) Netherlands AZ CC: 62.875
(43) Spain Real Sociedad CC: 57.000
(48) France Marseille CC: 54.000

Pot 2/3
(66) France Rennes CC: 35.000

Pot 3/4
(88) England Bournemouth CC≥ 23.837
(88) England Sunderland CC≥ 23.837
(104) Spain Celta Vigo CC≥ 19.409
(112) Germany TSG Hoffenheim CC: 18.580
(129) Portugal Torreense CC: 14.633

Looking at the co-efficients of the other teams in the qualifying for Europa (link below), there's only 9 currently ahead of us. Pot 3 would be teams ranked 19-27 and pot 4 is 28-36 wouldn't it?

Looking at the Champions League qualifiers who would join Europa if they get knocked out of CL qualifiers, there's only 7 higher than us. That's a total of 16 potential teams being ahead of us in the qualifiers (I think). Given there's only 8 ahead of us already then surely that means we can be no lower than 25th and therefore nailed on for pot 3?

If we're 25th and pot 2 is 10-18 then do we not need 7 of teams with a higher co-efficient than us to be knocked out in Champions & Europa qualifying as then we'd be in Pot 2 or can we get no higher than pot 3? Though I'm guessing co-efficient changes after each qualifying game so that might change things.

I thought 16 points seemed a bit high, 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats (or 4 wins, 4 draws).

The previous season Rangers qualified with a good goal difference on 14 points. That season you needed 10 points for the play offs.
Goodbye Saturday 3pm kick offs
They'll be at least 6 less Saturday games than this season (3 home). However, that would mean less Thursday / Friday night games as only Sunday / Monday really works for the Europa.

There’s some absolute dross in the Europa League, the standard has dropped dramatically since the big leagues gained more CL spots and they stopped the ridiculous rule of failed CL teams dropping into the EL midway through.

Freiburg were terrible last week against Villa and looked a really poor side. Last years winners were abysmal aswell.

Yeah Bologna beat Roma then got thumped 7-1 on aggregate off Villa in the next round.

I’d love us to get to the knockout phase like.

I don’t think the games are over 2 legs- we play 4 teams away and a separate 4 teams at home. Teams from same country are kept apart (so we won’t play Bournemouths and potentially Crystal Palace).

The rest is spot on, I think..
Yes pot luck who we play home and who is away

Champions League for the winners. Wouldn't that be something

And the UEFA Super Cup which nobody cares about unless you win it.#

Unless they change the rules there isn't a qualification for the Club World Cup as that is done on Champions League rankings.
