England World Cup squad news

Bowen, Garner and Maguire should have all been picked. Possibly DCL over some guy who has been playing in a league that is below SPL standard, as much as I rate Toney. It’s a shocking squad.

'I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players,' Tuchel said.

'Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.

'I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26 100 per cent committed players with us. Who know their role, who are ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch and who are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.'

certainly a departure from the "pick the most famous 11 and shoehorn them in somehow" approach of previous years if nothing else
All my life after another feck up in a tornament the press have said we need to build a team, not shoehorn star players in, for once a managers done that and the press are in meltdown.
They are bloody crackers.
We have tried every wich way but loose since 66 so we may as well try this.

I love how everyone focuses on the players that will hardly play. Our players that are capable of winning the World Cup for us are all there.
I’d bet my bottom dollar that the ones complaining the loudest here will be the first ones down the pub when we reach the final mate.
Bowen is a cracking player and should be on the plane.

I do understand some of Tuchel’s thinking, but despite that, find a few picks baffling.
Wharton in for Hendo
Maguire in for Stones
Hall in for Spence
MGW or Bowen in for Madueke

So out of 26 there’s only 4 picks which are head scratchers to me. Anyone that says this is the worst England squad ever needs their heed checking like. This squad is more than capable of winning it.

There’s no one not going who’d win us the World Cup.

Nowadays it’s rare for a single player to be a difference maker. At the same time, some players in brilliant form, some seasoned internationals, have been snubbed. None of the explanations for why make sense as they are contradicted by the picks he did make.

Maguire was arguably the most in-form centre half but has been left out for Burn and Stones, the latter of which has barely kicked a ball and is famously injury prone.

Maguire for Burn, surely?

As much as I dislike dopey Dan I think Stones’s fitness is a bigger issue. He hasn’t played a full 90 minutes since August last year.

Also a good point was made by Nedum Onuoha on BBC this morning, that Burn being left footed is good if Tuchel wants to play him as a LCB in a 3 or 5 at the back and to be honest I agree with that reasoning. It made me think about Euro 24 (or was it Qatar 22?) when Southgate tried Tripper at left back and it was a disaster because he was on his weaker foot when playing down that side.

Palmer can and has played there. Even though it's not his preferred position he's still a better wide player than Madueke
Leaving Palmer seems a mistake to me .

I know hes had a poor season with injuries .

But it's only 11 months ago in scorching US heat that he twice waltzed through the PSG defence to score in World Club game.

He could've come good at World Cup - something different to bring on if we needed creativity.

I don't get that

Whether a centre half is right or left footed makes little, but not zero, difference. I’d rather have a much superior centre half.

You just need for him to create some magic and it’s all worthwhile.

Disagree a little here mate. In a 2 at the back I agree little difference but in a 3 it definitely makes all the difference. If it didn’t Onouha wouldn’t have highlighted it.

Dan Burn is also built like a lamppost so a good player to get on the end of Rice and Saka corners. Not saying he’s the next Maldini, I just reckon Stones’s fitness is a bigger issue which is why I’d take Maguire over him
