That was mental. I think they were trying it on because it was only the fourth time the playoffs had been used to determine promotion, and the first time that the highest place team in the playoffs didn't win. It might have saved the world a lot of bother if they'd won that argument, as it was failing to secure promotion that led to John Hall, Keegan, "the Geordie Nation" and everything that followed...

They lost because their playaes were knackered and they didn’t deal with a cross that went in

I do agree it was wrong for them to be spied on and the correct outcome would be to get rid of Southampton but that 20 minutes didn’t make them lose. It’s morally wrong and that’s the reason they have been punished. All clubs in the continent do it every week.

The news is just amazing today. Check out this Clampett on BBC news just now at St Mary's:

"We're a laughing stock," said Russell Kitching, a Southampton fan speaking outside St Mary's stadium. He said loyal fans "don't want to be labelled as cheats". He is calling for every fan to be given £1,500 and a free season ticket for next year's campaign. He added that if the club did not act then fans would go and potentially support their local non-league football teams."

Why would you go down to the stadium in the wake of this news?

No. Southampton were at an advantage because they knew how to defend their corners and free kicks. They let in that goal but they could have scored three earlier if Southampton hadn’t cheated.

I honestly don’t get why people don’t see this.

Yes it is the point i am making is however long he was watching the training ground wouldn’t have had a massive impact on the game.

It’s more morally what they have done breaking rules etc.

It’s done by a lot of teams overseas so be good to see the stats that.

Southampton deserve to be thrown out and boro deserve their chance.

Using data and footage that is available in the public domain.

Finding out if a team is likely to utilise zonal marking at corners and free kicks and which players they will have in which zone can give you a massive advantage as you can organise your set pieces to maximise your defence or maximise attack against weaker opponents.

If it wasn't for Slot just being pig headed and not changing McAlister marking Burn at set pieces, you'd have thought Newcastle had spied on Liverpool and knew which zone McAlister was covering.

Right Southampton will have had people watching 20+ boro games

Analysing corners and free kicks via wysclut hudl etc. not just one training session like I said it’s wrong what they have done via FA and EFl rules.

This happens on the continent weekly.
 
So, IF the unsaintly ones lose the appeal and isnt that contempt of the rules and, shouldnt they lose another 4 pts for wasting peoples time.

These patterns are also picked up in games. Previously and after many teams try the same thing time and time again and “recycle”
That’s a known fact.

Like I’ve said Southampton have done wrong and they have been booted out fairly.

How do you know this? Maybe Boro developed a tactical masterclass of attacking football last week, and you didn't know it because Southampton worked out a way to counter it and the resulting stalemate was effectively disguised as a really boring and shit game?

Hypothetical. We have no idea how much information the analyst saw before fleeing. But the issue is simply that, it is all hypothetical and cant be determined what impact it truly had. It comes down to the intent by Southampton to circumvent the laws that matters, not what information they actually managed to gather. They're dead to rights on that and I cant see how they can get the ruling overturned when they have admitted to trying to essentially cheat.
Yes Middlesborough should have still won that first game, if Conway could actually finish. But it's the butterfly effect, no one knows how things would have turned out if Southampton didnt spy so we have to assume it still effected the result... if that makes sense
