Southampton spying compendium thread

What could they have seen? Only their entire game plan.

It needs to be a strong enough punishment to stop others doing it, if it's something daft like £10m but they get promoted then it's not a deterrent.
It’s all ifs and buts though. I seriously doubt they changed anything from watching the match. Usual run like cheetahs to close them down tactic. Look it was definitely unethical, not disputing that, punish Soton 100%, however I don’t want borough to profiteer, they weren’t good enough. Award it to Hull, dock Southampton points next season no promotion to the premier this season is more than ample. If borough had won, it would have been cheats don’t prosper. Borough would have won on merit, they didn’t though. Of course you can award Hull promotion, nothing stopping it. Whatever decision they deem acceptable will be debatable. Would you be so pro boro get the tie if it was us who were the alleged culprits?

People can argue this point forever.
What can't be argued about is the fact that somebody from Southampton was at Boro's training ground observing (at the very least) our preparations for an important play off game - which is against the rules.
That immediately puts Boro at a disadvantage.
Whether that had an impact on the result will never be truthfully known, but the fact remains that somebody from our opponents broke the rules (with obvious intent) - if proven.
That surely means that we have every right to question the result.

If it turns out that Southampton are punished and Hull are awarded promotion on the back of that then fair enough, but at the same time it's not a 'given' that Boro's performance wasn't affected by it all - that was obviously the reason for spying, surely.
They can’t argue the point at all. What they can do is have a bit of windey up fun with strangers on the internet about the subject.

Whoever won is irrelevant. Rule breaking isn’t only rule breaking when the game ends in a specific score line.

Got my tickets but resigned to it getting moved to a midweek to allow Boro in. Ticket office have confirmed refunds will be given anyway but won't be much consolation when I'm cutting the grass next Saturday instead.
I think the FL will be moving heaven and earth to have the Final played on 23rd, The financial loss that they would incur cancelling an event that size would be huge. Plus all of the sponsors have paid up to have it then. If Boro are allowed back in the will be told to take it or leave it.

I seem to remember that Bob Murray was told by the League president before the final that Swindon wouldn't be promoted if they won and was hoping we would win to save them having to confirm that decision. Denis Smith and the team were not told this by Murray prior to the match.
Way they played in the final I beg to differ we were awful 😉

youve misinterpreted my reply. I’m not disputing rule breaking only applies if the scoreline deems it so. You want borough in the final, great, I don’t think it’s the correct decision. I won’t convince you and you won’t convince me,simple as.

Talksport just said if found guilty of spying
2 options
First leg boro awarded 3- 0 win
Or Southampton expelled from play offs
So either way boro in final
Shite on saints players and fans
Yes I feel bad for the players especially the ones doing the binoculars celebration

Fuck em

Every media outlet is reporting a sporting sanction is the more likely option, so the two suggested by talksport address far more likely than a fine.
A sporting sanction isnt comprised of awarding boro a 3-0 first leg win, or expulsion for Southampton. A points deduction is still more likely. The betting markets (often a decent indicator) heavily suggest the end result wont see boro in the final.

I repeat myself Swindon were kicked out after the final so why not Southampton
Swindon had basically cheated every team in the division, financial irregularities allowed them to sign players they would not normally have been able to employ.
How much of an advantage Sothampton gained is debatable, they were shocking in the first leg,and much better in the second, when any info gained from spying would be negated . So ~ dont think comparing the two events is relevant.
Southampton have broken the rules, but expelling them from the competition would be in my opinion be extremely harsh, especially on their fans. A transfer embargo and points deduction would imho be the most appropriate penalty

Yet when man city in 2014 and chelsea cheated more recently they just got a fine. You cant have severe penalties for one form of cheating and minor penalties for another kind of cheating (which will have had a far greater impact on results).
Both things can be true tho.

You can’t have EFL being lenient because of Chelsea.

We all know the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Newcastle’s owners have gotten away with murder over the years.

It shouldn’t influence this specific case
