SOL expansion

Theyve done a good job keeping the same colour scheme etc. Im still not convinced but we'll see what the final version is like
Shame they couldn't get the repainting done underneath around the turnstiles before it went up.
No the lettering is spot on, it matches the turnstile numbers. Assuming theyll fit little spotlights underneath maybe?
He's meaning the unfinished paintwork underneath the lettering and above the turnstiles.

I posted about this the other day talking about how tremendous our West Stand exterior looks compared to the others, and how I wish they’d done the same with the North Stand after the extension rather than cover half with the white cladding. It looks good where the big cats are on the wall.

Tbf yes it is for atmosphere for those of us left if shit hits the fan and the ones who fancied it after we became decent again suddenly decide they don’t again and ‘won’t be back until [insert name] goes’. All I want is for us to wait to see if the demand is sustainable. Even just this year after the season we’ve had, 1,000 plus didn’t renew which is likely down to cost - and unfortunately that will also only get worse.
The demand is never going to be sustainable. It's football, we'll have good patches and bad, all teams do. If you're waiting for absolute certainty that we'll be top of the premier and will stay there, it's not happening.

However, we'd be stuck at Roker Park if we took that risk adverse approach. Loads of people said we'd never fill a 40k stadium, never mind 48k.

We need to go for it. If we ever get relegated, I'm happy with some empty seats, if that means we can have 65K screaming at a 6-0 victory over the mags.

I’m not talking about extremes like if we plummeted to the third tier again, obviously then it would be natural crowds would dip. However since 2001 when it was extended last to the current capacity there have only been 3 seasons we have sold it out over full seasons, including a full 10 year stint in the PL from 07-17 when we didn’t achieve it once.

Getting bored of repeating this now but this isn’t a dig or underestimate of our support. I’ve said time and time again I think we’ve got the biggest and loyalist hardcore going. I just think we need to prove a bit more consistently that we can fill what we have before jumping the gun after one season for the first time in absolutely years, especially when already circa 1,500 didn’t renew this summer.

On the original one, the lights where behind the red lettering but the lettering wasn't transparent. It was lights behind the red lettering that created the light reflecting back off the white around the red letters.

This is an older tweet that shows some lettering up but when it swings around, you can see the white panel cover for the letter N as it hasn't got the red letter on (snapshot below). I'm not sure the white squares are backlit or not but it does seem each letter is made up of 4 parts. The 1st was the frame work attached to the stadium, 2nd a metal backing (possibly reflective?), 3rd the the white panel with grey letter and 4th the red letter on top.

Either they're doing the same as the original with the lights behind the letters which leaks out around the letters, or the red letters may be illuminated and some of that light will also go back through what looks to be opaque letter shapes on the white panel and light it up the white panel also. If it's like the original then the lighting may not be as good to what it would be if the whole thing lit up. I guess we'll find out soon enough 🤪

of the 1,500 some will have died, moved away, had kids or whatever. We're still sold out.

Also we don't need to sell out every game, if we extended to 66000 and got 60,000 for some games, it's still better than what we have now. They could drop the price for kids to lock in the next generations too.

You've got to dream big to be big.

Always irritated me why the north stand extension didn’t match the number of rows, makes no sense given there is space to have it same size
The road behind and the gas vents from the pit meant it couldn't be the same size. The North Stand extends out to within 2m of Vaux Brewery Way. They couldn't go out any further.
Im sure building regs say you have to be a certain distance from the road.

From a business perspective it's not. There's arguments for corporate, there's zero arguments for normal seats.

You can increase prices more if there's a queue waiting to take your seat since FOMO kicks in. If there's no queue, people can just pack it in anytime and pick and choose when to turn up.

Vaguely remember something similar was mentioned when the expansion was done.

Can someone help me out here. Was that sign displayed for a period on big poles near the seafront? Im absolutely convinced it was but cannot find any evidence.

Very Different to what was planned

Also it needs to be thought of as a multi use venue. I personally don’t care if we don’t sell out every single game. Does the o2 arena sell out every single ticket for all of their events? Of course not

Increasing the capacity along with corporate offerings makes the stadium more attractive for the biggest concerts, increasing revenue. Like her or not but the SoL was within a whisker of getting Taylor Swift and I’m pretty sure we would have if there were a few more cheap and expensive seats on offer. That would’ve been incredible for the club and the city’s economy

I’ve said before but I’d rather be getting crowds of 53k in a 56k stadium than 46k in a 46k stadium and don’t give a toss if some weirdo mags make fun

Is that all glass between the brickwork sections? I wonder if there’s brickwork behind the white metal cladding or if it’s just that and then the steel that makes up the structure? I think even plain exposed brickwork where those sections are would look better than the cladding, as the big Black Cat sections look good and it would be in-keeping with the exterior of the NWC and West Stand.

Correct, for the first time since 2002. Let’s see how it goes before we get ahead of ourselves.

I would as well because that many empty seats is nowt really. But in our last PL stint our highest averages were 43k, so around 5k short of capacity. If say we ended up dropping to that again if we had a couple of average seasons up here, what would be the point in extending to 56k and having 13k empty seats? Don’t care what anyone says, it is shit for atmosphere and looks shit when you’re in the ground as a supporter. Obviously the firestick lot wouldn’t care.
