Diarra lately

Seeing the GIF back really helps (cheers again @ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK for posting).

At the time I thought he very softly tried to lift it over the keeper and it would have barely gone past the 6 yard line.

The only way he’d see Talbi is if he suddenly turns his head to the right when running through on goal, but no player is doing that one on one in the last minute at 3-3.

It’s ridiculous to blame him for not passing it to Talbi.

Sorry mate, but that's BS. You don't need to turn your head "suddenly", you just need to hear your team mate's shout and check by slightly turning your eyes, Talbi was right there and Diarra's body was turned to the right so he should have seen who's coming (a human can see way behind him having his head turned to a side).
I don't believe for a second that he didn't see and hear Talbi from that position.
Not the first time he doesn't pass to the obvious free man either.

When it happens it's very fast as if you look at the longer clip. Talbi is nowhere near close enough to begin with and behind a Villa defender. After the class pass from Le Fee, Diarra is away when he 1st touches the ball but Talbi is well behind and there's no way Diarra knows Talbi is busting a gut to catch up either. Diarra is on his own from his perspective is within 2 seconds of facing Martinez.

It's only just before Diarra knocks the ball slightly to the right with the outside of his boot to gain to shape up to shoot that Talbi is in a position to be seen but Talbi is still 6 yards behind (shades of grass are 6 yards).

By that time, a couple of seconds and no doubt many thoughts of what to do, Diarra has made his decision as shapes up to shoot when the ball hits the D of the penna area as you see him adjust his feet with smaller strides.

The whole thing happens in just a few seconds and those who've played footy know that a few seconds watching isn't as fast as when the ball is at your feet and the gap to the keeper is closing fast and the pressure is on. The camera angle also make it's look closer than it is.

As for the pace of the ball as some are still saying it wouldn't have gone in, unless they've missed the slow mo gig. The ball is kicked faster than Ming's is running and it would have went in. The image below has the ball just after it's kicked at the top and just before it's saved at the bottom with Mings in a similar position in both.

Didn't realise it had gone so far as to some claiming it wouldn't have even gone in/reached the line :lol:

How do you know Talbi has given the call at the point he's striking it? You cant judge someone on what you think has happened. He's got it out of his feet well, gone through, and tried a dink, like many many others have done in that position. He has a split second to think and fancies his chances. He probably should score, but let's give credit to the keeper, who has stood up and made a decent save. Peoplexare going on like 1 on 1s aren't often saved or that he has missed an open net.

What shout?

Did Talbi shout?

A player who usually scuffles his shots being in front of one of the best keeper on the world should've 100% pass it to the team mate who would've tap it in the open net.
And Rooney was actually a a very altruistic striker, he would've passed the ball 9 times out of 10.
Imagine thinking Diarra is running through thinking "I usually scuff my shots, and this keeper is class, so I best pass it across" (to a player I might not even see/be aware of).

He is clearly confident in front of goal. You can tell by the effort. And his pennas.

:lol::lol:

Villa got a lift from him missing that easy chance
Ànd there lies the positive-villa needing a lift against a newly promoted side who were a whisker from coming back from two goals down to beating them -away from home.
Incredible how we have progressed
If we stick with this young squad -accept they are developing -who knows where the journey takes us -after one season it’s been a very very unexpected ride

What do you base this on?

I think he’s starting to look a better player. Should he have scored? Yeah probably but it looked a decent save in real time and because of the way he attempted the finish he will get pleters because loads of our fans can’t handle anyone trying something that isn’t the norm. Did to remember he is just a kid really, he has loads of time on his side.

Yep the burden of big transfer fees.
He’s clearly took longer to acclimatise to the Premiership and this country than others.
He’s had injuries and still very young.
He has a step up to make and when he does I think he will be some player.
At the moment it feels a bit like Jobe and the new to play him every game he is available until it all falls into place
Someone to judge next season

Have you seen the replay though from the camera behind Diarra, Talbi is miles behind him, he makes up ground quickly but only gets anywhere near him just as HD is already pulling the trigger. Could he have done better yes, should he have, possibly. He's had a decent effort and the keeper made a good save.

Not from you by the way but I'm shocked at the levels of abuse the kid is getting. That's just on here, presumably it's much worse on twitter etc.
I've just watched it again on MOTD analysis and it shows even more that Diarra wouldn't have seen Talbi at the start or to consider him an option unless he has eyes in the side of his head.

Now slow it down to analyse it easier. You can see Diarra's looking down at the ball and then moves the ball with outside of his foot to move the ball into a better position to hit. At this point Talbi is nowhere near. Diarra then looks back up and focuses on Martinez and then shapes his feet and looks down to hit the shot.

Given his position and Talbi's initial starting position I think it's fair to say he thinks he's away on his own. He can't get as far as he did and then start turning head when he's setting up the ball to be hit all while focusing on Martinez.

Superb season and proud of them all.
But Diarra is getting on my nerves, the goal we conceded because he decided to sleep on the ground against Brighton, the awful penalty against Leeds (still can't believe that went in somehow), the miss on Sunday, his poor shots all season, his poor decision making almost every time when we have a dangerous attack...
Has insane energy levels, pace and gets into good positions but he's so ineffective with the final ball it hurts.
Let's hope this can be trained into him with time.

Thanks for this.

I think after watching that, you can see why Martinez is so highly rated. That's a display of exceptional positioning. The way he cramps the space and only gives Diarra a couple of options. IMO, the best option would have been to rifle it hard and low to the left, above Martinez's right knee. There just wasn't the room for a chip.

I also think it's very harsh blaming him for not seeing Talbi. Like you say, he had a matter of seconds to think about what he was going to do.
