The homegrown rule and January

Don’t think he qualifies, joined us in July and he was 18 in May.

Unless I don’t understand the rule. Which is quite possible
Saliba joined Arsenal in July 2019 and was 18 in March 2019. The season runs till the end of June, so he had the full 19/20, 20/21 and 21/22 seasons even though he was 21 in the March of 2022.
Mayenda joined in July 2023 and was 18 in May 2023, he will have the full 23/24, 24/25 and 25/26 seasons even though he will be 21 in May 2026.

"However, it is technically possible for a player signed at 18 to qualify, if they are born in the first six months of the year, and join in the summer immediately following their 18th birthday. This will apply to Saliba in upcoming seasons."

I thought he was. He was in Chelsea’s youth teams.
Signed too late to get the full 3 years before turning 21. I suspect Mayenda will be the same, won't count as homegrown.

Or maybe not....

See if that still applies I guess

Our problem with that is that we don’t really have many that are PL standard?

Ballard will hopefully stay, and Mundle. After that who do we have?
I suppose for building the squad the back up and 3rd keeper are good easy wins for that. Not sure what Patterson will do long term, shame Neil not deemed up to being a squad player, along with Cirkin’s contract situation. It’ll be interesting to see how Matty Young develops.

Otherwise, along with Rigg in a few years you could be looking at 6-7 homegrown players who are all suitable for a premier league squad?

Certainly a fun headache for Speakman and Ghisolfi to figure out together to ensure they’re prepared for it

Since Patto, Neil, Alese, Matete, Anderson (no big loss) are all out the door this window (assuming Patto goes now). Are we down to the bare minimum of homegrown?

Will this hold back the likes of the Jones brothers being able to get out on loan as I assume to get round it we are going to be pulling in the younger lads from the reserves into our squad count?

Only first team I can think of who may qualify now:
Ballard
O9
Mundle
Rigg
Cirkin
Hume?

I assume this means no more loans out now likely as well.

Hume doesn’t count. Rigg doesn’t technically count either as he’s under 21 and so don’t need to be on the declared senior squad

Simon Moore counts as well though

I imagine it’ll be a priority in the Summer as we’ll be leaving ourselves short

Hume doesn’t count. You can name a smaller squad I think.

We can not have more than 17 non homegrown players.

Roefs
Ellborg (if signs)
Hume
Mukiele
Geertruida
Alderate
Reinildo
Hjelde
Xhaka
Le Fee
Adingra
Traore
Brobbey
Isidor

Sadiki, Diarra, Talbi and Mayenda are all U21 so don't count.
Diarra and Sadiki will be counted in the squad next season.

You can leave spaces in the squad if you don't have home grown players, so loaning out HG who won't play isn't an issue.

Just looking at what space we have here, and it’s not a lot

You’re allowed max 17 players in your 25 man squad (excludes under 21s) who haven’t played 3 years in England/Wales before they turned 21

We’ve used 16 this season, so unless we drop one from the squad (Masuaku I guess) we can only sign one “foreigner” in January. Doesn’t include Abdullahi/Tutierov either

Caveat: I think this is how it works.

The club will clearly know the rules and shit around this. Why are folk thinking they don't?

Trust the process.

They probably don’t have to next season as enough players are U21 to be able to have a full squad but the season after would get tougher. Obviously if we qualify for Europe that changes things as we’d have to meet different rules.

Who is u21 next year? Rigg is, is anyone else
