I’ll get pelters for this but I believe, in terms of what he’s building at SAFC, KLD does mean it when he talks of being ‘best in class’ in all operations & aspects of the club.
He’s done his ‘education’ in regards to football & business more generally - and surely one of his reasons for buying us was the identity of the fanbase?
The ‘problem’ here is
a) deciding who / how people get into games is far from exact science. Look at ANY club for that.
b) He’s employed people who may have experience in ‘the industry’, but that means it means they are prob not sunderland fans… or maybe even ‘proper’ football fans. It’s very unlikely they’ve spent 11 hours on a coach to / from a midweek game in Norwich to watch a dour 0-0 with nothing at stake.
c) the quick turnaround in fortunes we've had in 5 years means the balance of supply vs demand has changed massively, thus this particular hot potato has not been given due attention in the same way player recruitment & overall PR have.
Will it ever be given due attention? Possibly, but in the meantime those who endured shit aways in L1 are being submerged in the clubs inertia.
I would hope to see our fans, and the likes of RAWA & the Echo, to realise that we have have already proven our commitment to the club - and they all need us as much as we need them.
Success will mean (inevitably) we become drawn more to the City, United, Arsenal, etc. business models.
But when the likes of Ghisolfi say ‘we are not Man City, we will do it the Sunderland way’ then so the club need to apply that same mindset to the relationship with its fanbase.
If they don’t they’ll end up with tourists & daytrippers who’ll drop the club like a stone if we drop (again) from the PL.
I think KLD knows that and David Bruce prob did too. If not, he needs reminding quickly.
