SMB Film Thread 2026

Last nigh I watched *Mercy" and "Warmachine" both are reasonable watches but for me these both fall into the 1990s bracket. Hard to explain.
I find that a good thing! In a similar vein:

The Expendables (2010)

Shite. Great. Cheesy. Stupid. Amusing. Entertaining. Badly acted. Nice action sequences. High star power. 6/10

The Expendables 2 (2012)

Shite but less shite. More great. Still cheesy. Still stupid. Still amusing. More entertaining. Still badly acted. Better action sequences. Even more star power. 7/10

And a couple of randoms -

A Face in the Fog (1936)

Poverty Row whodunnit about a hunchback terrorising the staff of a theatre company. Has some period atmosphere and the old fashioned production values fascinate me, but as a film it’s below average.

3.5/10

The Man from Yesterday (1949)

A well-to-do family are intrigued by the arrival of their father’s old friend, who turns out to be a spiritualist. His influence starts to rip the family apart. Stars Laurence Harvey and Henry Oscar. Seems to exist in a vacuum of country family privilege, and the ideas don’t develop to their most impactful.

4/10

Good Boy (2025) - 7/10 - Stephen Graham and Andrea Risebrough star as an odd married couple who abduct an out of control teenage delinquent. They're intent is to rehabilitate him in their secluded house along with their younger son. It's all a bit odd and unsettling. Graham initially reminded me of Hugh Grant in Heretic but the story and character don't quite go in the same direction. The sub plot of the cleaner was pretty superfluous in the end only for one plot twist requirement I suppose. I quite liked this as it didn't follow the obvious narrative too much and the ending was a pleasant surprise albeit a bit odd!

I spit on your gravy.

Film about a mag who decides to go on holiday with his Sunderland mates immediately after the derby.

The Housemaid

Thriller based around a rich couple who recruit a housemaid obviously.
Twists and turns. Good performances from the 3 main characters.

Cobra score of 8/10. Really enjoyed it. .

Mercy (2026) - Amazon

Alright. A poor man’s Minority Report and more like a tv production. The twists are telegraphable and the production/filming style feels vaguely amateurish. Pratt and Ferguson are decent, though, and the pacing is quick. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. 5.5/10

The Expendables 3 - 2014

Glorious shite. I was put off by the 12 rating but the action is solid the only thing missing is gore/graphic violence. I don’t really give a shit about that. It’s an entertaining throwback rammed with names and the jaded, cynical reviews didn’t get in the way of my enjoyment. Gibson and Ford show why they’re better actors than the majority of the people involved. 7/10

Good Luck or die trying or some shit . 5/10

Mildly amusing in bits, started decent and had some relatable things in it like the phone stuff, my wife was constantly glued to her phone through most of the start which was quite ironic. It did feel like one of them spoof films and seems to rip a load of films off. Nowt new really. Just about watchable

Trying to guess if the star of this film is 50 Cent or Sam Rockwell

Superman (2025)
Watchable but disappointing.
5/10

Frankenstein (2025)
Sumptuous to look at, Guillermo Del Toro's take on Shelley is well worth a watch.
8/10

Dracula (2025)
Luc Besson's film owes more to the first 10 minutes of Coppola's Dracula than Stokers novel, taking only a few plot points from the novel and going off in it's own direction. Normally this deviation from the source material would annoy me, but in this case it was refreshing to get something a bit different. Campy, over the top and a bit ridiculous, I quite enjoyed this for what it was, rather than what it wasn't.
7/10

Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey
Yeah it's bad. It gets an extra mark just for it's "bear" faced audacity.
2/10

Watched the 2 Ready or Not movies today, it's been a slow day

First one decent, doesn't take itself too seriously and plenty of blood and guts to keep you entertained. The second one starts straight after the first ends but you know what it's all about this time. So it has to work harder and it does to a degree, but still lacks that edge the first one has. 7 and 6 respectively.

Crime 101 [2026] 7/10
It starts strong with the opening heist but never manages to top it. It's influences feel too obvious, the writing fails to fully flesh out it's novella characters and for a movie that's nudging two and a half hours it never feels epic. Barry Keoghan's sociopathic biker is fun, though.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die [2025] 6/10
A Black Mirror episode trying to be Everything Everywhere All at Once. Unfortunately, it's directed by Gore Verbinski. The third act is a complete failure.

@Fletch73 just watched crime 101, decent!

How the ferk is she 59!?

They Will Kill You (2026)

Zazie Beetz gets a job at a residential building for the rich, but all isn’t as it seems…

I give this a little extra credit as it’s trying to do something different here, and at 96 minutes is fairly inoffensive. Patricia Arquette continues her later career good work as a woman trying to hold a bizarre organisation together (Severance another example), with support from Tom Felton and Johnson from Peep Show. Influences include Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez mashed up with The Evil Dead.

6/10

Project Hail Mary (2026) - Omniplex

Enjoyable sci-fi, very much in the same vein of The Martian by the same writer. As with The Martian, the film is carried by a brilliant central performance, this time by Ryan Gosling instead of Matt Damon.

I deliberately didn't watch any trailers or read too much about the movie beforehand, so for me it was full of surprises throughout which was great. Some decent action/drama, some really touching moments and a few good laughs along the way. Also a strong supporting performance from the fantastic Sandra Huller. Just felt it was a bit overly long, and felt like it would have been just as effective a movie if they'd not bothered with the final twist/act, and cut off about 30 mins of run time.

7.5/10

They should keep trying to make Zazie Beetz happen though
