Early leavers and final whistle on Sunday

Unfortunately this is what’s creeped into our support after having a decent start.
No this has been going on for years the knars
These people have a different mentality, they’ve become indoctrinated by their ignorant ways.

However I will admit to me and my mate leaving early. We were playing Walsall, late 80s and we both said if we are getting beat by these 3-0 we’re leaving. We left about 15 mins early. I’ve been embarrassed and never mentioned it before 😢.

Will you ever forgive me the knars

You serious? Theres about 20k more there than was left at ours after 85 mins

Aye it wasn't as bad as I first thought

Guess at 1-0 it makes a bit of a difference

I was hoping man United got a second before the 90th minute to see what would happen

An individual leaving the match early probably subscribes to the ‘my one little wipe won’t matter’ school of arse wipe disposal.

It’s disgraceful let’s be honest. I don’t see any other stadium in the country empty like the SoL with 10 minutes to go.

Makes a mockery of the so-called best fans in the world.

It happens everywhere. I don't really care about what other clubs do, I'd just rather our fans stayed. Sunday was the first time it's been as noticeable this season and it was a direct response to Fulham scoring, which is really disappointing

When we get the piss taken out of us by Fulham fans, then we know it’s bad. It was more than noticeable, it was a massive strop on our part.

No. Hand your season ticket back.

Didn’t even surprise me in the slightest.

It’s always happened. Unfortunately we have a lot of customers rather than supporters.
For most people it’s a habit practiced over many years - leave as soon as they think the game’s gone😡
When the club is trying desperately to build a connection with the fans, which it did successfully with the 'til the end campaign and the generally positive relationship between players and fans this season, it must be galling for the players who are trying their hearts out on the pitch to see thousands not prepared to support their team until the final whistle.

It's not like a film where if you don't like it you leave the cinema early or skip a song if you don't like it on Spotify. This is our football club, it's different from any other form of consumerism, the whole point is there's an irrational love for an institution which, in Sunderland's case, would have lost virtually all support in recent years if it was simply about the product on the pitch.

Even if was just about 'the product', it's now at its best for a generation and there have also been lots of late goals this season so that argument doesn't stack up either.

People who consistently leave early are generally consumers, not supporters, who don't epitomise what supporting the club is really all about. It's almost become a badge of honour to leave early ffs. Support the lads 'til that end.
Spot on, well said

I know for a fact from personal experience (nothing bad!) that the club monitor this forum closely.

As such, if they’re really serious about trying to encourage people to stay until the end, they first need to get to the bottom of why folk are leaving.

They need to put in some hard yards here and contact all SC holders and people on the ticket database about this just to establish some facts. Nothing confrontational, just a fact finding mission to see if those who leave early do so all the time or some of the time?

If the former, is it habitual, due to concerns over getting out of the stadium (perhaps if with young children or due to mobility issues), to go to the pub/for food, for transport/traffic reasons, or a combination of the above.

If the latter, is this due to personal circumstances on the day or due to the match situation.

In either scenario, is there anything the clubs could to that would help.

Every club has early leavers in fairness. Football fans have changed over the years and many just got to watch the PL brand rather than SAFC. For night games it’ll be a public transport issue fundamentally, we are still living in the 19th century when it comes to that. In recent weeks we’ve just been horrendous, I stayed till the end on Saturday but I felt like walking out after Brighton scored as you knew it wasn’t our day.

If the club monitor this forum then there are a lot more important matters that could be raised imho.

I’ve posted this many times before on this subject but they need to make the exit and getting away from the ground easier for people….

I was in a box on Saturday and 15 mins after the final whistle there’s people still making their way out of the east stand and Roker end. There needs to be exists out the back of the stands. Like we had at Roker Park at the end.

The two massive tunnels at the SWC and the NWC also need to be exists for those who sit in the lower bowl of the stands. I mean the full tunnel not a little side but like you get in SWC.

The club and police also need to close all roads around the ground especially KHW and have it filled up with P&R buses sat there waiting to fill up. None leave until 15/20 mins after final whistle and the once full and ready to leave the police manage the traffic lights so that the buses get a clear ride to Sunderland Enterprise Park … the police used to do this at Roker Park which was further away and we had crowds half the size !!! It’s also a much safer way of controlling the flow of people than the absolute shit show it currently is on KHW … someone will get seriously hurt one day on that road.
