Retirement

When considering what you need per year, I'm assuming people are accounting for tax? Obviously there are ways to minimise eg using the tax free 25% of pensions over time rather than in a lump, but still an important consideration obviously.

Are these figures you are quoting gross or net?

This. The ludicrous sums for a "comfortable" retirement are largely scare mongering from those with a vested interest in getting people to save/investment more.

We do ok and spend a lot less than 45k a year to do that.
Music to my ears
I've got 2 yr to go (58) and think £30-35k will get a good lifestyle at home for a debt and mortgage free couple , then it's all about personal preference for holidays, for me and another £10k a year on top sounds about right for what I would want as holidays are going to be a big part of my retirement but if you're not arsed I think £45k is OTT.
My lad is in Australia and shows no sign of coming home. So we have set some aside for visiting. But it’s great to know the 45k cover everything and leave some to towards visits. So we would need a big trip every other year.

I think of lot of these posts are foward planning so you have income sources that won't incur tax . Particularly the early leavers . Before state pension kicks in ,keeping taxable income beneath the threshold and topping it up from isas or whatever. Im not taking an annuity it's just in drawdown . Ive had my tax free lump but I'll still take as much as i can this tax year keeping below my allowance ,not necessarily to spend but to use somewhere eg Isa because it's tax free . If I wait until state pension ive already burnt up my allowance earning that so your drawdown costs you to spend it and use it .

Im 59, 60 in a few months. Committed (sort of) for another year at work. Thinking of going then. I come on here and to try and get an idea of what we will need.

I’ve read guidelines that 45k a year per couple is a comfortable retirement. Thinking we might be on track, fingers crossed. Can any retirees give me peace of mind that this fairly realistic.
I'm 63, been retired 2 years now. I have a spreadsheet and know where every penny goes. (Sad I know but helps me feel relaxed about my finances)

My review of 2025 was around £28k for a very comfortable lifestyle.

If I needed to, I could easily reduce that but I want to enjoy my retirement, I've worked for it.

Single, own my house, no mortgage or debt.

Broad brush numbers

Holidays £5k
Utilities £2k
Housing £5.6k That includes council tax and some one off repairs so will be less this year)
Car £2.5k Fuel, insurance, MOT, service
Golf £4k
Entertainment £2.5k
Groceries £5k
Contingency £1.5k

Similar age and situation to me but I only finished in April so can't do a years sums yet
I don't do exacts but I do a quick tally each month end . Ill spend nowhere near the 28k but we're all different . Eg I didnt need any big repairs and my car running is way less .
Then of course as you spend, bits of investments increase,my drawdown fund has increased . No point in just saying I've spent xxx amount ,im happy to say ,I had this overall, now I have this overall

I’m halfway through 6 months notice leading to my retirement. I was thinking of working another couple of years but had a fall out with the owner and thought stuff it. Got my state pension letter last week, payable from mid May the month after I reach 66.

Our lass (no) is going to work another couple of years, she’s 60.

Always had you down as being around 60. Good luck though

43 (going on about 60 if you ask some ha).

Always was the intention to jack in at 55. Spoke a few months ago to a fella along the street and he jacked in at 55 last year and he basically convinced me even more that it's the right thing to do, hence dropping a day last month. Quality of life gets my vote over a few quid extra on my salary.

Hopefully you have stuff to do mate . If you were ready to work on ,maybe not.

That's young id say but no reason it can't work . You got plans as I think just knocking around might lose its appeal. My mate went a similar age and did big box ticking
E4 European footpath, right across Cyprus and half of crete. Pilgrim trail in Spain. Off road motorbike tet in Spain. Cycled to Portugal from northern Spain etc . Coving and an illness slowed him down

Will you be able to take your pension at 55? It's going up to 57 in April 28. Might be even higher by the time you get there

Nothing sad about a spreadsheet. I've said before I've got them going back 12 years or so, it's how I knew I had enough to retire based on what I need.

Covid not sorting his ceiling 😁
I’ve got a few things to do around the house over the summer, sort the garden, put some new fencing up and decorate a couple of rooms. I’ll see how I feel when the nights start drawing in again.
Do your indoor stuff in winter 😉

Travel basically when I can do and hopefully plenty walking adventures. Lots of things I want to do which I'm starting to give myself a kick up the @rse with and getting them ticked off. Health of my wife will continue to be rubbish so looking after her will get more demanding in the future. Mortgage free, by the time 55 hits we would just be working for the sake of it and being hit with tax far too much... No thanks

At 43 I never even thought about retirement.
Do you not have any career ambitions?
