Thank you Dan Neil

It’s pretty sad that a lad who has been at the club since he was a young child and was so significant in our rise through two divisions back to the top flight never got the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage with Sunderland. Obviously football is extremely ruthless and cut-throat and whether it was his perceived inability to perform in the Premier League or his contract situation it still feels like a less than satisfactory ending to Dan’s time at SAFC.
This for me too

I suspect we will never know what has gone on behind the scenes to get the full picture of why it has played out like this

It’s a sad day but a good move for both the player and the club. End of an era in a way. Dan Neil should be immensely proud of his part in getting the club back to where they belong. In one of the most turbulent times in the clubs history Dan came through the youth setup and whilst in league 1 was one of the few players that give the fans any sort of hope. He was one of our own. Hope he goes onto to have a fantastic career.

Its a shame he didn't seem to have been given a chance to develop further as a PL player, but I'm assuming the club played hardball in contract negotiations and he rejected the final offer.

Now it's confirmed I don't know how I feel about this. Almost every other player from last season was given a chance (Ballard, Hume, O'Nien, Isidor, Mayenda, Mundle, Rigg and even Roberts) and whilst there is no shame in him not being up to the standard, you could argue he never got the opportunity to confirm that theory.

Anyway, in Regis we trust. Best of luck Dan

Good luck Dan.

His problem was he kind of reached his ceiling. Very good Championship player but he kept making the same mistake repeatedly. He needed to learn when to hold the ball and when to release it early. Got caught in possession way too much for a deep lying midfielder.

Hopefully he can iron out that flaw and have a very successful career at a good standard.

Not sure we can point towards the contract situation either given Cirkin got a run of games whilst in the same contract position.

RLB just mustn't have trusted him at this level. It's a shame the club won't get any decent fee for Dan, but we more than got our value out of him on the pitch. Would get a special reception if/when he comes back to the SOL
