Luke O'Nien

He loves the club, the city and the people. I could be wrong but I suspect he’d rather be a bit part player in his own fairytale ending than a big fish in some potential nightmare shitty pond somewhere else.

I stand to be corrected (said the man in the orthopaedic shoes 🙄😂)
I don't doubt that for a second but being a footballer is a short career, I think he'll miss not playing regularly.

The lad is 31. If he has aspirations to play a reasonable level of football for a new club before he gets too old for that project he needs to move on. He’s been brilliant and massively overachieved but he’s not going to play games. Being promoted with players under contract was always going to result in us paying for players who don’t play, but if we can we should look to trim those from the squad we’ve got a lot in that position!

What thinketh you now?
Not sure if already posted but he told Nick Barnes that he's going nowhere

Fishface doing Fishface things.

O'Nien has the self-belief and determination to defy the odds again and show that he's capable of successfully stepping up another level.

Best player (on the day) on a pitch that included Xhaka, Sadiki and Pickford.

When they came up to the away end after pens to acknowledge the fans O’Nien was sat back a bit and seemed to be taking it in and holding back emotions. Thought it looked a bit like he was potentially heading away based on that but can read into anything.

I hope he stays and does have a chance to get into games. Obviously we’re blessed with talent at the back but any player is able to have a bad patch as Alderete can show. Our game is based on intensity for full 90 and it’ll take its toll.

O’Nien didn’t put a foot wrong all game but didn’t just play it safe, he was good at bringing the ball forward and he seemed to really click with Xhaka. Made up for him to have that performance and winning pen.

He was fantastic yesterday, great lad, great presence around the other players, i hope he stays.
I think most hope he stays marra
Will get games ( injuries -if he plays like yesterday and deserves to be in side why not ?)
He’s fantastic for the club too -no brainer to keep as I could easily see Ballard and Alderete out at points in the season
Delighted he played really well yesterday

Don't know if it's been mentioned already but before the game they showed Xhaka showing Onien exactly what he wanted from him. You could see the respect Onien had for him.

09 played well yesterday, no one could complain about that performance.

But let’s not get carried away:
1) It was a second string Everton team. Eight changes.
2) His last ‘Premier game’ lasted less than five minutes.
3) He’s not as good as Ballard, Alderete, Mukiele, Geertruide. So is essentially fifth choice.
4) If he’s Premier level then why aren’t Premier teams in for him?

He’s a decent Championship player, that’s his level, better than most of us could dream of.

His value at Sunderland lies off the field. His personality, heart and enthusiasm.

He has a choice to make on whether he wants to play every week at a lower level, stay and be content with a squad place or possible coaching role.

Whatever he decides, I wish him continued success.

Luckily he’ll not listen to any of that waffle.

Number 4 was a particular highlight

Thought he was going to hoof that ball into the crowd but no, he was keeping it

2) a mistimed challenge after a hospital pass when playing on the wing when he was hoyed on at 3-0 down to City away is hardly a massive black mark

Was it Flanaghan who slated him, and possibly McGeady.

Maybe comes across as a bit of a teachers pet but probably a joy to manager over those two.

Tom should maybe have took note n he wouldnt be at L2 Colchester.
He was best pals with Flanagan and George Dobson when they were both here so id be very surprised if he was slagging O’Nien off
