Australia V England , 4th Test, 25.12. 2025, 23:30

Never in doubt

Was on the road all day and didn’t see any live cricket. The game finished just as we pulled into Byron.
Lots of people will be pissed off with a 2 day test, not just in Melbourne but landlords across Oz were banking on people sitting in pubs on their summer jollies watching cricket all weekend

Thrilling overnight particularly when Carse came in, not the worst move. But overall an empty feeling, batters were still useless and bowlers finally put the ball in the right place against the worst Aussie line up possibly in my lifetime

Difficult to argue on the first point. It’s been ridiculously bad on that metric. The only thing you might say to offset it is that this is probably the worst Australian team in living memory for overs per innings as well. So it feels a bit like a statistic that’s selected to fit a conclusion. But they have been disastrous at putting an innings together no doubt.
On the above point, amongst one of the many statistics AZ came out with was one that confirms the above (or at least, a pretty much directly correlated balls per wicket stat).

So far this series has seen England’s worst Ashes performance by that metric since 1888. But it’s Australia’s worst since 1905. So, whether you credit crap modern batting, dodgy pitches or good bowling it is indeed the worst by either side’s batting line up in living memory.

Obviously an excellent result.

But two 2 day test matches out of 4 so far is not good news for test cricket.

(or cricket Australias coffers id imagine)

Can’t bloody believe it. And two days again. WTF. Can’t believe it’s our first test win in something like 16 games?

Australia clearly had a strategy of preparing bowler friendly wickets in the belief our kamikaze batting would cost us the series. It worked as planned three times on the spin but backfired here and cost the MCG three days of revenue at 80-90,000 a day.

Anyway, well done England, especially Josh Tongue and Jacob Bethell. Goes to show why you should give other players an opportunity.
