SOL expansion

Think with attendances people often jump to a conclusion that Stadium Capacity is a defining indictor of a clubs potential fanbase but West Ham are an example to show how that isn't really the case as Capacity often limits potential.

They only used to get mid 30K crowds at Upton Park and their record crowd was 42K. Their new stadium has shown that they had the potential for far bigger crowds when I bet a lot of people would have dimissed them being able to get over 60K week in week out. Man Uniteds near 75K Capacity is nowhere near their potential.

I reckon approx potential for most weeks for the following:

100K+ = Man United and Liverpool
80-100K = Arsenal
65K - 80K = Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City, West Ham
50K - 65K = Newcastle, Everton, Villa, Sunderland, Leeds

Then circumstances come in to it. Challenging for honours, expensive ticket prices etc. Clubs could move up or down categories based on those 2 factors because West Ham and even Man City wouldn't be in the category they are now with mediocrity or relegation battles for a prolonged period.
Think you are more or less spot on but I'd put city, Chelsea, in the same row as us and the mags etc

Why not build a new stadium?
A lot of NFL teams have replaced their stadiums which hadn’t reached 30 years off age.Reason being the need for better corporate facilities and fan experience.Plus there life expectancy of the stadiums are only between 30/50 years before they need to have massive upgrades or build new ones.

There is hundreds of millions of reasons why

I think we'd top out at 55K. South Stand opinion would probably be enough althiugh again id wait 3 seasons to see what happens. If we're oscillating up and down divisions then existing is fine. Just my opinion mind!

Hear, hear.

A 100 odd pages of drivel and finally we get a sensible post.

I would put Newcastle's potential support in a higher bracket than ours. They've got an enormous catchment area. Leeds could be huge if they could really capture the interest of a larger percentage of their catchment area.

I can think of about a billion reasons. Unless we end up with a rich benefactor, it's not going to happen any time soon.

Out of interest are there any restrictions preventing an expansion of the east stand (I assume there aren’t for the south stand given the plans that were revealed recently) but is there anything for east stand expansion? Appreciate that would be much further down the line. Presumably assuming there wouldn’t be any restrictions capacity potential if east stand replicated or were similar to west stand would be 60-65k..

Bit different over here like. we can't force the local council to pay for a new stadium or else threaten to move the 'franchise' to a different state. All the new stadiums in the US are massively subsidised by taxpayers.

Finally someone thinks like me spot on 30 years Stadiums become outdated sometimes it’s cheaper just to start over rather than peace mail it together over several years
