Best/Worst Ground You've Been To

I'll add Eden Park to the list of terrible grounds. It's a rugby stadium and is all wrong for cricket. Stands are too steep, because its a rugby stadium, and I think the straight boundaries are about 45 meters.

Never got the hype for Trent Bridge either, its alright but not a patch on The Oval or Lords.

And if I can choose a place to go, I'll have Galle please.

I was at Canterbury for the first time today. I think that's my favourite ground so far.

Really nice ground in a nice area, good view, good turnout, friendly locals, jazz band playing, and ok for food and drink.

Lost a bit of its charm when the Lime tree fell
Players and spectators held the Tree in great affection. In his autobiography, Colin Cowdrey wrote, “If I was given a choice as my last act on earth, it would be to walk to the wicket on the lovely St Lawrence Ground in the sunshine, with the pavilion chattering and the small tents buzzing. I would then lean into a half volley just outside off stump, praying that the old timing still lived in the wrists to send it speeding down the slope past cover’s left hand to the old tree for four.”
Cricket as we knew before Kookaburra and 16.4 appeared.

That's a beautiful quote. Thank you for sharing. I would have loved to have been to see a game with the St Lawrence Lime still there.

Got to love Grace Road, second biggest playing surface in the world after the MCG 😆.

Do like it's quirkiness although not in the nicest area just off Saffron Lane!

We played Notts at Kibworth outground earlier this week, nice ground that is.

I love the Oval but it does suffer from overcrowding on big match days and doesn't have any space to expand into.

Spent many a lazy afternoon at the Country Ground in Bristol (or whatever it is called these days) when I was a student there and should have been working.

I'm not sure it has hosted any professional games but Sidmouth is pretty gorgeous setting right by the sea. Bet it can get windy though

York. So bad it was good.
The toilets were just a brick wall to slash against.
Great day out.

Edit - it's the cricket forum. As you were....

Only been to 3 grounds that fit your criteria so Durham will have to be the worst even thought it’s a cracking little ground. MCG the best.

Best. Malahide Ireland

Worst. Lords. Awful viewing from the cheap seats.

Going there in September, so this is good. Been to Malahide before in general.

Newlands can't be beaten for me.

Funny as I love Lords, but its too expensive now, I had top seats in the test Archer knocked out Smith, think it was 80 to 90 quid. which is a lot but its like more than double that now.

Lovely idea for a thread. Off the top of my head, I've done:

Riverside (and various DCCC outgrounds including the gorgeous University ground before CLS was built)

Canterbury - including the day we won our first County Championship
Lords - both days of the one day final 2007
Scarborough
Trent Bridge
Grace Road
Derby
Edgbaston
Rose Bowl
Chelmsford

And the MCG - on the first day of my honeymoon, drinking XXXX Gold watching Shield cricket with the wife, who doesn't really like cricket. I had spent the first night of my honeymoon, the night before, getting drunk with a load of Mackems at 1 in the morning watching us lose to Man City in the League Cup final!

Favourite - Canterbury. Special memories, gorgeous city and pretty ground, and the remoteness of it makes it feel a real expedition to get there, love leaving Victoria on a half empty early morning train to the coast, sun shining, beer in hand, the essence of a cricket day out for me.

Favourite test ground - Trent Bridge. Managed to retain a charm despite, lovely sensitive redevelopment, nice seating high up in the Hound stand.

Least favourite - Edgbaston. That big ugly main stand overshadows the whole place, gloomy, too big, no character at all, ugly surrounding area and a long grim walk from the nearest railway station.

Rose Bowl - yeah it's ok, just soulless. Not unpleasant and good facilities, but charmless despite the leafy environs. Hedge End is the arse end of nowhere, and the Rose Bowl is in the arse end of that.

I do like traditional grounds, not much to choose between the rest really but I like Chelmsford, decent array of stands including upper tiers, usually well attended, knowledgeable crowd that have always been good banter despite being from Essex, nice town, interesting museum and bookshop to peruse in the ground too.

Top of the wish list, Worcester.
