Grauniad: Premier League preview: Sunderland

For me and many others who were around at the time, it was the promotion in 98-99 with Quinn and Phillips up front. We were basically ready for the PL already and then made a couple of very astute signings to guarantee it and then had a fantastic season which took us comfortably into the top half.

We had other very promising times since (eg under Keane) but every promotion since 98-99 was a big challenge and this one will be no different, even though we have everything in place to feel very positive about the club's future.

Can't disagree with that. But that was 25 years ago! Seems like an age!

I just think this set up across the board feels a bit more professional. We've handled transfers well (ie not doing all our business with OTT media speculation and fuss) weve bought a good mix of experience the unknown and youth.

Even the new kits are a reason to be positive.

Well….she could try and not do the lazy and predictable ‘journalism by numbers’ piece.

I’m not expecting us to storm the division, but neither am I expecting us to just lay down and die like she appears to think is our rightful place.
POOR.
But she doesn't say that at all?

Bit nonplussed how anyone can say one of Leeds, burnley or brentford are better than us. Honestly believe brentford will finish below us.
Couldn’t the mags use Gateshead stadium instead
Don't care if they play at Filtrona Park, Newcastle Arena or the Jeddah Dome. Not our problem.

Berwick is also in Northumberland. Berwick Rangers' Shielfield Park holds 4,500. Just saying ...

This. I have no issue with people thinking we're going to get relegated. In fact I think we will myself.

I do, however, struggle to understand those predictions where we're below one, or both, of the other promoted teams with little justification of why. Take this one on the BBC. He's got us finishing 19th, saying we've signed too many and won't integrate etc. But Leeds are 17th "because one promoted team has to stay up" and ""Elland Road might do it for them".

It's not that they really like their signings more then ours, that they have quality in their squad, love Farke etc. it's down to their f***ing stadium apparently...

All three promoted clubs come up with squads far below the quality needed to stay up, and look to buy that quality. If in your predictions one is above the others, and especially if one is above a PL team, I think you should really be justifying why you think that's the case.
Their own stadium did fuck all for them when they were relegated a few years ago
The only team I am confident of finishing above currently is Burnley. I feel we are a quality proven centre forward behind Leeds still, but I know fuck all about the other bottom feeders we will be competing with really other than that a lot are tipping Brentford and Wolves to be down there

Well she’s a supposed Sunderland fan who thinks we should share the stadium of the light with the mags when they build their new ground. Wouldn’t worry too much about what she has to say on our prospects one way or another if shes that out of touch

They say a lie gets round the world before the truth has got it's boots on.
I strongly doubt that Taylor 'thinks we should share the stadium of the light with the mags'. She is a reporter, who REPORTED that somebody in the Mags heirarchy floated the idea of a groundshare. Not her. She reported the fact, and now one of the few MLFs in the national media is tarnished with a lie.
"Out of touch", you say?

Burnley who won a 100 points last season? Leeds who dominated the league?

There was a huge gulf between us and them last season. I think people are going to be in for a shock.

" Moreover, if Milan and Inter can share San Siro, the two north-east rivals can surely cohabit for a while."

why did she write this then?

We haven't got the £60m+ needed for one of those. Check out the names scoring more than 10 in the PL last season.

I notice they have us going down in 19th.

I’m seething. I just punched a very nice vase I brought back with me from my travels in Egypt which I went on when I was feeling bloated.

Yes. They’ll end up training there and the women using the stadium eventually as they kick Gateshead out IMO

Wow!
Sorry it took a while to reply but I was out the door for a long trip to the game, as I'm an exile.
I stand corrected and will absolutely never refer to her as a MLF again.
The only extenuating circumstance is that IF it was a provocative editorial 'correction' : the Grauniad as edited by K Viner has lost all credibility for me. Not saying that scenario is true, but stranger things have happened.
The groundshare idea is ludicrous in the extreme; it would make the BCB meltdown look like cup of spilt milk in a land war; massively disruptive to our city too, and the rozzers would never allow it on safety grounds in a million years anyway. As you say, no MLF or sensible Mag would ever suggest it.
Anyway... what a weekend!
