I guess in a Sam Allardyce kind of way then you can often make sides more compact and hence central defenders look much better than they are if they're playing in a very tight structured manner, with lots of protection in front of them, means they get exposed less.

I don't really think so, at least not with the main defensive stats. To a small degree, if looking at limited data, then it might work like that, but when you have a more complete range of stats to look at then they paint a clearer picture. eg if we look at aerials won, simply having a high number of aerials won could mean that your team is playing tight, forcing more crosses into the box, and therefore you might see a higher number. But that doesn't mean you are a great defender, because you could win a lot of headers and still only win 30% of them. So you have to look at both the number of headers won and the percentage of headers won. And then if you also look at clearances and interceptions, well if they are also high it tells you that no matter how tight the team is supposed to be playing in front of you, a hell of a lot of balls are making it through, and the defender is doing a pretty darn good job dealing with it. So a defender who is well protected, with a team playing tight in front might actually look less impressive, if they are less exposed.

Alderete's passing stats are really interesting actually, and it's fun to try to understand the way he plays just from analysing the data. Where team style can come into play a lot though imo is with these types of stats, because it seems Getafe were definitely not trying to play out from the back. His stats show a huge number of long passes attempted in comparison to short. Probably the biggest discrepancy I can remember seeing from any of the targets we have been linked with this summer. But that doesn't mean he can't play a different way, just that this is how they were set up.
