Sunderland railway station.

I mean you talk about the train station being shit but the whole of Fawcett Street and Johan Street, Blandford Street etc are all the absolute pitta as well. It's in the worst location for anyone entering Sunderland for the first time. All the worst parts of town are there. Hopefully they will do something about it.

It's took them a year but they've finally bordered up the police centre and CAB that got smashed up and burnt down by the scumbags in the riots. Like.most things in Sunderland, slow reactions times.

Yep and direct your anger to them

I think they are all culpable.
Sunderland City Centre, needs a Police Station/ office, this would be ideal.
Sort out the scratters who frequent the station

That has been suggested before and I'm surprised nothing has been done about it - then again the The Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner probably doesn't give a bugger.

How are the council culpable for a premises that isn't run by them ?

Railway stations always attract wrong uns it seems. Light, shelter, seats, toilets to smash and of course a ready supply of potential victims. What's not to like.

Thats 100% what it is I reckon.

Maybe them Victorians had the right idea putting Durham's up a massive hill to put off 21st Century smack heads and beggars

Didn't Northumbria Police tell everyone Gill Bridge was knackered, sure the only way for it to go was to be demolished, full of asbestosis blah blah blah. Yet, in 2025, people working there, gym, car park round the back, not falling down.

NP just looking for an excuse to get out. That pathetic excuse of a police station that was set on fire was a token gesture to do whatever, whatever that was, no idea. Wasn't it unmanned other than a couple of hours? Despite Kim McGuiness turning up in Sunderland the day after the riots, I have no idea what her purpose is. Vera Baird was another one no idea. Perhaps a proper Sunderland City centre police station with some visible policing, how about that for a radical suggestion Kim ?

You missing out, Osbornes Austerity Cuts. Farra was shut as well. But Police Stations were shut all over the UK.
I agree its an actual disgrace there is no Central Police station in Sunderland.

You do realise those cutbacks on the police happened under the tories? Why no blame on them?

The whole thing should have been bulldozed and moved to Monkwearmouth.
Said this loads of times. There was an opportunity to reopen the station. Especially with all the work round the sheepfolds. They could have had the entrance on the Sheepfold side. Extended the platform down to St Peters for Access to the lifts for disabled access.
It would have created a new gateway to the City. Especially with the new Keel Bridge.

It was a police office, not a station. But yeah it’s poor that Sunderland city centre doesn’t have a proper police station. Southwick isn’t that big really, compared to Forth Banks in Newcastle.

The design is absolutely fine , that's not the issue with what happened.

Northern showed a photo preview with loads of seats, plants , artworks , and full units.

None of these have happened and this is all down to who runs the station.

Personally disagree mind, the design is 100% what's wrong with the station. It's just far too big for what it is, and it's just not needed. The old station was ugly, but the layout was 100% better.

There's no need for a huge concourse as the vast majority of people use the Metro which is every 12 minutes. Outside of that there's a local 2 car train once or twice an hour and those people will be also heading straight down to the platform as most will be local and the 6 Grand Central trains a day.

imo they need to just get rid of the space and stick a large unit in it's place instead like it used to be overlooking Market Square.

All goes to suddick don’t it?. I lived in park row while it was being built so it must be a canny age now that place.

Maybe because the PCCs have all been Labour and they promised us a proper police station and presence if we voted for them.

The good news is the station is hosting 'The Mackem Market' this Saturday (09/08/2025).
