SOL expansion

I did a search in which AI suggested the bar was there from 97. The below shows otherwise so you were correct.

You'd hope if extending other areas any corporate bars would be superior to that build 25 years ago so may take longer.
Haha 😝 could’ve just asked a few of us were around mate 😂 like others have said before the expansion the north stand was a mirror of the southstand now. They had the sports bar had my first legal pint in there with me ma for my 18th.
Nice to read some common sense from the club on a stadium extension. Make sure the long term demand is there then consider it.

Rather than following the advice of rtg and just extending because of one season ticket sell out in our entire history, or also more importantly for the many concerts we hold at the stadium, or even better just put 6,000 extra seats on the stadium (doesnt matter if used) just so we can extend our corporate offering.
They need to keep us up first, if the club manage that this season I can see them seriously looking into it for the third season up. We will need to maximise income for psr in the future. Let’s survive first like that’s the first big job.

I know our ground is outdated, each new generation of grounds seems to be ground breaking and leave the older ones further behind. But if it’s possible getting more space within the ground around an extension for fans to spend their time (and money) would be worth its weight in gold. The ground offers very little for standard ticket holders currently and there is little incentive to spend any more time than you absolutely have to within it.

Thats from behind during Construction of the North Stand Upper. The Timber Boarding is where the Glazing and Doors are now for 76 Yards.
And from inside the Stadium, Took this photo at the Reserves game v Manchester United when a Milton Nunez made his infamous debut ;-)

As they said there needs to be a long term demand. That essentially will need us to get fully established as a PL team which wont happen in a couple of seasons.

PSR may not be a thing after next season as the Premier League are looking at Squad Cost Ratio (SCR), similar to what clubs in Europe have to abide to with UEFA regulations. This will make things even harder for clubs to spend big on players and wages.

The expansion may happen one day but I don't think we'll see it soon. Before then we'll see price rises, concession area reductions, possibly some seats being 'upgraded' in whatever way to squeeze a little more out of fans.

They’re really interesting photos. Thanks for sharing. There’s not a lot of photos/videos from the extension happening.

Why would we expand? 48k is plenty.

We are 1/3 to go down 9/4 to stay up today after the signings to date. Do people want another 8k of seats we won’t use?

Improving the quality of the corporate offering makes sense whatever division were in including a lower level bar and basic food that normal fans might use at least periodically. But we’re not about to become a top 10 PL established club and even if we were we wouldn’t get 56k plus in. Be realistic everyone !
Boooo

I think the fact getting tickets for Sunderland games is so easy contributes to early leavers and empty seats on a midweek. Now it’s not a given you’ll get a ticket I think that will focus more minds. So no. Expansion long way off.

Got a few more in my archive. I was at Sunderland College at the time studying Construction and the Built Environment so we were down all the time.

Interesting article in the Echo at the time

“SUNDERLAND Football Club today submitted plans to spend £5.5million increasing the size of the Stadium of Light by almost 6,000 extra seats.

The club revealed it is only the first stage of a three-phase expansion plan that will ultimately see the stadium expand to a capacity of 63,000.

This first stage will see the Premier Concourse extended around the Vaux Stand taking the capacity from 42,000 to 48,000.

The second phase of the expansion plans would see the Metro FM stand increased by 5.500 when the Metro link to Sunderland is completed

And The McEwans Stand would be the final phase of the possible expansion programme and would be subject to England winning the right to stage the World Cup in 2006”

It should have been called the Vaux Stand permanently.

Anyone know if that lad got his taxi license?

Remember watching the extension go up thinking f***ing he’ll it looks massive. As I lived across the road I got to see it every step of the way and it changed the skyline hugely especially if you were on the bus from town heading up southwick road.

The club will chip away at concession tickets and look at ticket prices generally before even contemplating any extension. They want to create scarcity. We need to stay up obviously otherwise it's academic.
It all means nowt if we go straight back down. They’ll have to revise those season card prices IF we comeback down as I can’t see those prices flying. Don’t think £590 is it for my ticket now in the sec flying in the championship.

I bought one for the premier league season ( dropped it at Covid ). I would renew championship or not as I can see that the club is trying to move forward and frankly we know relegated clubs with parachute money generally do well.

Obviously though I recognise demand would fall if we're relegated.
