Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Lad who lives over the road is very high up in planning for Sunderland city Council, and said there is no chance , of bridge being open for 1st game , there's a possibility for the rugger , but official hand over date is and always has been start of October
It's aimed to be ready for the rugby world cup game , Dave Bruce confirmed this again last night

A more sensible option would be to fly in a few herds of elephants from Mali and have them test the bridge before the first game.

If we used guinea pigs, the weight load wouldn't be sufficient.
iirc the contractors used 238 African Elephants as their standard for the bridge support piles which they designed.

Should be torn down before people start riding motorbikes on it, vendors move in to sell sticky rice and som tam and the police take bribes to let blind lottery ticket sellers take over.

What i said , aim,/ possibility for rugger , but the contracted date is early October and safety will be 1st priority not an early hand over
It will be open for the rugby and then it will close again to finish it
Probably use rugger as a live test if all other tests have passed , due to large crowd but not as large as a safc game

"During VolkerGround Engineering’s first visit in July 2023, the team constructed a single 880/750mm diameter rotary bored preliminary test pile, on each side of the river (North Pier and South Pier). The piles were subjected to a 14MN test load, the equivalent of 238 African Elephants!"

Yeah i'm pretty sure the people making the bridge won't have considered match day footfall and probably won't be bothered if it falls apart the first time people walk on it, not like it would have any adverse effects on the success of the company
Im scared to use it.....the engineers have clearly not though of that.

Warrabout the accumulation of seagull shite over the coming decades, that'll surely tip the scale? iirc the club are hiring a firing squad with air rifles to take care of em. Don't think the construction company considered this when I checked the plans.

Does anyone know if there is a plan in place to test how it holds up under the weight of full match-day footfall? It almost feels like we are being made the guinea pigs to test its strength. A mate of mine was on a run down the river, he worked on the Megyeri Bridge whilst living out in Budapest and said he had some real worries about the standard of work on our new footbridge. He said the abutments (end supports for transferring loads) didn’t look sufficient for the loads it would need to transfer on a matchday.
Haway man, you really think a sub standard bridge is going to be allowed to open ? There will have been all sorts of inspections, tests etc so I think your mate is winding u up.

Your mate should just stick to jet washing and leave the engineering safety factors to the experts
