Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

Literally everyone would do it if they aren't already loaded.

You could do a year in Saudi then retire. Anyone who says they wouldn't do it is a blatant liar.

Imagine being able to do a years graft in a shit league knowing by the end of that year you, your family, kids, and probably their kids will be looked after for decades to come.

Easy to be righteous from behind a keyboard.

Again, another poster who judges people by their own moral standards.

BTW, Messi turned down $1.4 billion to play in Saudi.

Why would they check with me ? :-)

I have a view and you have a view it’s a football message board.

If we have a good season no one will be happier than me to be proven wrong. However, when you have a young and inexperienced squad adding a player who has won it all as a captain would just make sense imho.

Be careful mate, you will be accused of not knowing what you are talking about because you have a different view to some others.

Apparently to some on here he has lost his legs, he is only in the England squad because of his presence off the field, signs for a team who along with us could well be fighting relegation battle but the club don’t believe he would bring anything to our squad. Like yourself I find it surprising that Henderson wouldn’t be seen as a signing that would be a massive help to guide our very young squad on and off the field who with one exception have no PL experience.

I would have been happy to see him return because I am sentimental, I like having local players around the team and those that the club actually means something to.

Obviously the players have to have the relevant quality.

Honestly, I don't know what level Hendo is at now, I haven't really seen him play since he left the Premier League. And I suppose the club has to ask the question is he worth the wage expenditure versus what he will offer (both on and off the pitch) versus how that money would be spent elsewhere.

I would have liked to see him come in but I wasn't really expecting him to join after signing both Sadiki & Diarra tbqh. At that point, I thought the club had moved elsewhere.

Would have loved him back for sentimental reasons and I genuinely believe his experience would have really helped in games throughout a long season.

If he's been promised a pivotal role at Brentford (more than likely as they're looking like stripping the squad) then fair play, we're not in a position to guarantee that.

Very happy with our summer recruitment so far.

think we should have got him in straightaway, no brainer for his experience, name and quality at this level, seems he was waiting around last week and we made it clear there was no offer coming for him

hope these new lads are as good as some on here think they are, talk of challenging for honours in the top half of the league is very premature after a few belgian and french league signings

Good point, except he was already loaded marra.

He was a already a multi millionaire.

Wasn't about Henderson, but people who say they'd never do it or rather stick to having no money.

Used to be the same, then I realised that the world can only change if those who run it decide to change it. Money doesn't mean happiness, but it does mean you can be comfortable and worry free for the rest of your days.

A lot of people struggle to accept that we're completely powerless to change anything. The world would be a happier place if we all just did the best for ourselves instead of focusing on what is wrong/right. Just look at recycling as a prime example, it's OUR responsibility to save the planet? Not the blokes worth billions who are consciously putting this shit out for us to buy and dump in landfills? A load of bollocks. The first thing the rich do is deflect blame, then they use social engineering to make us feel bad.

So yeah fuck them, I'll take their £20m for the years work and enjoy the next few decades of my life cheers.

I agree with this, but I'd temper it with the sentimentality that saw Defoe leave us in the lurch.

I just think people are going to be disappointed given the chapter seems to be the media making an easy link but NE journalists not reporting anything actually happening or any talks are being made.

That with the fact I believe we weren’t interested before in bringing him back and he was leads me to think logically this isn’t happening.

I imagine he’s left Ajax with talks in place with a club over here (that or he’s just really missing home) so I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

top player still after England would rather Ajax than a championship club.. shocker
Lot of “ imagine “ and “ think “ in that
Which goes to show no one knows other than the club who play stuff very close -which itself is refreshing for us.

Wouldn't have been against it and can see what he'd have brought in terms of experience and leadership. But we'll be playing on the break in a low block soaking up pressure and have obviously prioritised ball carriers with pace abs athleticism. Perfectly possible that he'd be a better fit for them than us at the minute.

Correct, everyone would do it. A years work to give you all the money you would ever need.

Thanks mate. We sign a few unproven players (admittedly for good money) and some of our fans think we are going to be going for the champions league.

The premier league is the hardest league in world football, let’s see how these lads react when things aren’t going well and we need some nous and experience.

A lad from Sunderland who has won every thing. Classy.

I thought it was a no brainer bringing him back but they’ve earned our trust at the club and there’s no doubt once the season starts they’ll have done everything to make sure the Regis and the lads on the pitch have a fighting chance to stay up.

It was my list. It shows we sign older players regularly, usually (I think exclusively) on frees

To suggest we don't just isn't accurate, we've always done it under the new ownership and have continued to do so this window as well. That is absolutely part of "the model" as well

Obviously now we're in the PL the calibre of those players will rise
If you look at the players from last season, and the ages they were signed, or in the case of home grown players the age they made their debuts, the vast majority were 21 or younger.

This window so far we have signed two 20 year olds and a 21 year old. One is just outside the normal age bracket at 23.

Of course we do sometimes sign older players, but not often late twenties or early thirties.

Mandava is one of the exceptions, and on the face of it looks a decent deal on only a two year contract, good left backs are hard to find and hopefully he will be good enough.

100%- that's why the line about the players having the relevant quality is really important.

I was never massively in favour of Defoe returning tbh as he had barely played in the 18 months beforehand. Henderson, tbf, played a decent amount last season and in Europe too so at a decent level. I just don't know what his performances have been like.

They are different situations; I'm slightly disappointed but not gutted. I think there's a chance that Diarra, Sadiki & Le Fée could turn out to be better players for what we need.
