Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

Just my opinion but I don’t think we will make any signings until July 1st. Potentially could be related to the start of the new psr period but also we aren’t officially confirmed as a premier league team until after the AGM which is some time around now.

PSR goes off the club's accounting year, which for us I believe runs until 31 July.

Some brief questions:

1. Would it be a redemptive masterstroke for Henderson to play for free, all his notional salary going to (say) local child poverty charities?

2. It seems to be assumed that - were he to sign - Henderson's dressing room presence & what might be loosely termed his "leadership qualities" would be a fillip to the young squad members in particular, but might this be wrong?

3. Might the young players feel intimidated or overawed?

4. Might the young players (many of whom seem intelligent lads) take the view he's a hypocrite & thus want nothing to do with him?

5. Might his presence disrupt what seems to be a pretty harmonious dressing room?

Cards on the chebble: I don't much care whether he signs for us or not. I have mixed feelings about him & about the possibility of him signing. If he signs, I hope he lives up to the expectations of those who want him here. I'm more interested in the team doing well than I am in him & I don't see him as an indispensable element in the team's success. All that said, Speakman & others know far more about assembling a successful squad than I'll ever know. If they want him, I'm happy to defer to their judgement (not that it matters a jot whether I defer or not, ha, ha).

1 No-hes done nowt wrong, do you want to work for nothing?

I'm dubious about him coming back. It's got the usual sentimental bollocks attached to it that we used to see with calls for Ball and Phillips for manager, once last dance for Defoe etc ...
However, if he wants it and the hierarchy are convinced then he can be a great representative of the city and the club.

1. Why?
2. Born leader and highly spoken of, still in England squad because of this
3.An absolute example of what hard work can achieve, has been in their shoes, local lad, why would they be overawed?
4 been a pivotal member in some madsive dressing rooms over the years, would imagine he is a better influence than some unknown french lad who struggles with the lingo

Im pretty convinced that this is happening and I've done a complete reversal on my position. I think it can only be a good thing. I also keep thinking of this thing Bruce said years and years ago when he was still playing for us, that Henderson was a model profesional.and was worth an extra 10 million because he was always first to training, didn't smoke or drink and looked after himself.
Likely why he is still considered capable of performing in the PL.
We are going to have to be an incredibly disciplined side to stand any chance of staying up grinding out results with solid defensive displays. Henderson will be a cool head.

Sure. With the obvious difference that he's still playing top level football.

I suspect that anyone who thinks it is necessary for him to play for free, due to some moral debt from having half a season playing in a foreign country, will find another reason to have a problem with him if he did play for free.
It’s an absolutely bonkers idea.

AGM and share transfer has already taken place, we took part in the "£30 away ticket" vote - 4th of June we became a premier league team

Good to know. In that case there is some poor reporting from the likes of Talksport and BBC on the matter. Both said PSR had a 30th June deadline as set out by financial year of the premier league itself

Still a fit lad and with our pacey players up front imagine Hendo and Enzo popping the ball over the top for the speed merchants like Mayenda and Isidor. Hendo could play for at least another season or 2 then do some coaching.

I too have changed my thoughts on this. Really wasn’t bothered a few weeks back, not due to the Saudi thing but more his age. However if the wages are within our structure I think it can only be positive for everyone. Even if he doesn't play every minute of every game (few will even be expecting this) he still has a lot to bring. Think it would be an incredibly emotional day the game he runs out in a Sunderland shirt at the SoL in the prem again.
