Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Was never going to be anything else realistically. As has been mentioned, they ran that line through keel square with the very intention for it to marry up with the bridge originally;

"Preferred supplier Volker Stevin is expected to start work within weeks on the pedestrian and cycle bridge, which continues the Keel Line from The Beam to the Sheepfolds."

it wasn't, the original idea was to have something on the cliff at the end of the keel line to represent the front of a ship and had something on it that was to be like the swinging of champagne when a ship is named

For some reason it always stuck with me that the line would run directly to and over the bridge when they were first putting the square together. Just seemed like almost too much thought and planning for our council at the time I guess and it stuck with me. Can't remember the ship type monument you refer to. Not saying you're wrong like, mate, perhaps that was a backup plan if the bridge didn't get the go ahead maybe?

Yes it does.
I was down there yesterday and I noticed the keel line only has ships dated up to the 1920s so I was wondering if they were going to have the line running across the bridge and I have my answer now as it’s going to extend to the sheepfolds. I think the whole thing is going to look so good !

I can remember reading somewhere that they didn’t get all the ships on , it goes in date order from the culture house end of keel square being the earliest and ends just before the bridge entrance at about 1926/7

The whole of the Keel line is meant to be the same length as the biggest ship built on the wear. I doubt it will go right over to the sheepfolds. Probably onto the bridge a little bit

the line wont be going over the bridge, the line as it is represents the longest ship built

The keel line runs oto about the first 15m of the bridge
 
VolkerStevin and Sunderland City Council would like to inform you that essential preparatory works will be carried out on Keel Crossing to prepare the bridge deck for waterproofing which will protect it from water infiltration and corrosion.

Due to heavy rain last week the preparatory works have been extended until Friday 13 June 2025 and will take place between 4pm and 10pm

During the works there are likely to be increased noise and lighting levels which may cause some disruption to our neighbours.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and assure you that every effort will be made to minimise any impact.

Waterproofing at those times comes with some challenges
