Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

Lots of southern clubs have an unfair advantage. They shouldn’t be anywhere near the premier league really. Well run yes, but it’s all about the cash now. Same with Brentford, Palace, Fulham, Bournemouth. All above there natural mean position. Players want to live in London and the south and clubs have massive tourist support at the games. It’s rubbish. I live just outside London so I can see the attraction. Half of the people down here are cockney reds (Liverpool and Man U). It’s so tedious. Just means we can’t afford to keep our best young players. When is it going to end
Look at me, I live just outside of London.

This transfer makes sense if he’s not going to sign a new contract. His value will drop in the summer and he could be leaving for nothing in 16 months

He’s played a handful of games and is a kid. Yes there’s a huge upside there but he could also easily plateau our ability wise. Either way he’s not going to get many minutes in the run in we don’t have many games left and he’s still not fit. Hopefully the cash is used wisely!

Watson I know you are reading this, I would be in your shoes. Let me impart some wisdom on you...

In 70 years you do not want to be sitting on the balcony of your villa full of regret. Sure you are financially sorted, but money means nothing once you have it, you quickly get used to it and it's just normal. What really matters is what you've done with your life, did you reach your full potential? Or were you just a middling player who nobody really remembers, because you prioritised money over what's best for your development.

You can be a legend here, stick around and help get us promoted, then get your big contract. There is nowhere better in terms of game time and adoration. You could have your own statue outside the sol.

To Brighton fans you are just another piece of meat, they'll expect the world from you and won't be patient. With us you are like a son, we want you to do well as much as you do.

Don't follow the money and material things, it is an empty and hollow way of life.
Wow, bet christmas day is a right hoot at yours!

He wouldn't be leaving for nothing whatever happens. He's too young. We'd get a fee at a tribunal - which would be a rather significant one if he's a first team regular, had been offered contracts, and we'd rejected 10m bids for him.

I've avoided this thread up to now cos I thought it was a lot of posters inexplicably losing their shit but now I see it's almost a done deal.
A few things about this deal that I can't get me head around. Why are we even entertaining selling a home-grown player - a Sunderland fan no less - that's just broken through to the first team and has a handful of appearances? If his current contract's up summer '26 then I doubt we'll be any worse off if we had to do a deal this summer if we can't agree an extension.
Take a few mill off easy if we wait until the summer to sell. He doesn't want to sign a new contract by all accounts. Decent offer from Brighton on the table. I don't see much more what the club could be doing in the circumstances. Granted, we absolutely need to get cover in if he goes go (Adringa would be perfect)
