Retirement

Expenses that will go up: holidays
Expenses that will go down: kids finished uni, go down to 1 car, contributions to pension, eventually down size house
Holidays: yes in the initial years but then will likely go down again once you become less ambitious with them (or less able).

The main one that is likely to go up as you get older is care: currently the state will ultimately look after you once your money runs out, but will that always be the case, or if it is, to what standard?

Anyone picked up any new hobbies?

I bought a keyboard (musical) and learnt myself a few tunes from following YouTube videos. My daughter was impressed I could play Happy Birthday on her big day! Für Elise by Beethoven, Elvis (aye, that one), U2 - New Years Day amongst about a dozen. Usually spend a couple of hours two days a week on there. Rick Wakeman will be shitting himself.

As I've said before everyone is different but my spending didn't go up. I got a new car but that was because my plans didn't work out with the car I had, did my home improvements before I packed in. When you say expensive hobbies, do you mean new hobbies? I would have thought any hobbies you have would be factored into your budget anyway? Think @ivanthereasonable sums it up

Yep that was my plan to be going around now unfortunately it got to the point where I couldn't face it so had to pack in.
Another 2 years would have made a big difference to me but hey ho. The only caveat I'd say is don't keep get sucked into the "Ah I'll just do another xx years" or you'll end up never going 👍
The hobbies are a complete unknown to be honest.

At the minute I'm wanting more time to spend woodworking, and could fancy making some of my own furniture. I'm also currently making my own electric guitar. Improving on my tools and power tools could be one thing I want to do. But equally I might end up doing that bit by bit over the next 10 years anyway.

I struggle to find time for astronomy and astrophotography so upgrading that kit and spending the time when I know I don't have to be up by 7am (or earlier) the next day would be good.

For years I have wanted to learn to sail and get a small boat. Who knows if I ever will!

Couldn’t give a shit about care tbh, rather have it spent on stuff before then. Once I can’t wipe my arse my life is as good as over.

It’s what it’s all about mate, there’s no right or wrong answer it’s all about what feels right for you.
Norway trip sounds great had bikes over loads of times, was supposed to do Stavanger to norkapp but Covid put paid to that.
I've did Nordkapp a few times now, first time was in 1982, a lot of the E6 was gravel roads back the and no undersea tunnel to Nordkapp either, you had to jump on a ferry. I almost moved there about 10 years ago but me and the missus couldn't agree on where to live. She wanted to be down south where we had friends, I wanted to be up north for the fishing. In the end it never happened.

Yeah can understand that mate I’ve spent a fair bit time over there over the years, I must admit I did enjoy kristiansand was there 3-4 years that ride up the coast to Stavanger to catch the ferry was a great run also liked the ride up the middle past Evja (iirc). Some crakkin rides as ya say, I’ve got a massive soft spot for Oslo remember doing rides In land from there in the 90s.
I remember in kristiansand I used to take the long way home from work the lass I was with at the time was like ………. Where have you been billy you finished work 2 hours ago hahah

Happy days maaaaaaaan. Got me thinking backwards now man. Onwards and fwd thinking only these days gotta force mesel sometimes mind. What you smiling about ……. Ahhh just thinking backhahahaha

I need find some hobbies to do as I really don't do anything now which doesn't involve drinking beer and watching cricket/football. I saw what happened to my dad who retired to his armchair, never did anything to keep himself occupied and was dead within a few years

Not a petrol head in the slightest and have no musical, DIY or sports ability. I really like gadgets and tech but I'd like to spend less time with them in retirement.

I'd like to improve my languages, especially Spanish. I'd love to do a long trip to South America but it's one of the regions of the world where you really need to be able to cope in the local lingo and not rely on everyone else speaking English.

Cold to do the gardening.
All the bulbs are breaking through although I still have section of garden where I need to tidy up. This place was a massive garden project and still is to keep it looking nice.
Come Spring it comes alive with colour.

Hope you find it enjoyable. One thing I’ve learnt and had to adjust without my work head on you don’t have to rush everything with time deadlines.
Yeah really enjoying the garden it needs a lot of work to get it how we want it, and the cold definitely keeps you moving, but I was a North Sea tiger so used to it 😂
Not rushing it want to see what comes through this year, only doing a couple of hours a day after dinner and my grandad nap.
I still like my morning gym visit followed with a swim and suana/steam room and then a dog walk.
I never worked this hard offshore

I started learning Spanish on Duolingo about 10 years ago but found it difficult to get the time to concentrate on it so gave up after a couple of months.

A bit like me, I paid my class 4 NI when I was working and didn't bother when I was abroad. My accountant said it wasn't a problem as you can back pay it when you retire, except they moved the goal posts and I missed that boat leaving me with a State Pension of just over £7,000. What pisses me off though is some years I've paid up to 42 weeks out of 52 and those payments count for nothing, money paid in for years and you get nothing back unless you have the full 52 weeks contributions.

Yes, I wish I'd put more into my pension when I was younger. Like you I tried semi retirement in my late 50's but found I was spending the same if not more money than when I was working and on half the income. So I went back to full time work.
So what's the 7k if you've got nothing? " nothing back"
I'm 52 and would retire at 55 if I could afford it, which I definitely cannot.

Whereas when I say that to some friends they say they will work until they drop and when questioned why they say why wouldn't you.
A quick look at what they've going on away from work will tell you a lot about mindsets like that .
If you're making wooden spoons in Hamsterley forest for a living on 34 hours a week fair enough

Nothing back for the years I paid class 4 National Insurance but didn't have the full 52 weeks. One year I had 42 weeks of NI contributions but as it wasn't the full 52 weeks it doesn't count towards your pension. I must have made hundreds of pounds of part contributions and got nothing back. Only full years contributions count towards your pension.

Ah ,OK.
The top up thing has been well aired lately
Martin Lewis etc .
I was ok but a couple of mates , bought there's

Few people say they are spending the same as when they were working
But surely once you’re retired you shouldn’t be putting away savings anymore , no more employee NI , no more pension contributions , hopefully your kids are fine and no debts need help with etc .
I read before that lot of people struggle to get out of saving and into habit of just spending it- no more saving needed

I'm assuming they mean they spend the same on nights out, holidays, clothes etc. I expect my spending to go up, more holidays, but as I won't be saving i won't need as much income
