New Zealand v England 3rd test Hamilton

Why Root and not Gus Atkinson?

How many cricketers have taken a five fer, ten fer, hat-trick and scored a century in their debut season?
Plays for Surrey, hence the lack of recognition
You aren't aware of Luke Littler, have you been living under a rock?

Keely Hodgkinson 800m runner won gold, Alex Lee won triathlon gold, Sarah Storey is the most successful Paralympian we've had and was her 9th Paralympics.

Because he became Englands all time run scorer.

Littler shouldn't be there ahead of Humprhies. But it's not about who did the best sports thing of the year.

It's called sports personality of year. So it's really just a popularity thing.
Tbf I love darts, but it's not a sport. Also Humphreys should be in over Littler anyway

And no-one follows athletics or anything like that outside the Olympics every four years, and personally i can never be bothered with that, so it's not a surprise SP doesn't recognise any of them.

Wasn't surprised about the Olympians/Paralympians. Just letting him know who they are.

But Littler has been everywhere this year.

More people watched last years final than pretty much every game of football Sky has ever shown.

As we've both said Humprhies is the star darts player but it's personality contest like I said.

Yeah I only follow football and cricket mate. Know a few from outside those realms but only if they're really household names. Obviously not been paying enough attention!

Nope that would be the man he overtook Cook
If Herbert Sutcliffe had played 150 tests he'd have had 15,000 runs.

We all love Joe but being England's top scorer is a lifetime achievement and SPOTY is ostensibly about achievement this calendar year. Brook is another one who would arguably be above him by virtue of a triple century and 1000+ test runs at 60+.

Because this is the year he has become the heaviest run scorer in the entire history of English cricket.

Ah just read the whole thread see it was been argued.

which is why i always think there's a rabbit off when an olympian wins, cant tell me an 800m runner who gets focus for one month every 4 years is more popular than Jude Bellingham
im sure the BBC only like to have winners from Sports they have rights to show

You asked why he was up for SPOTY of the year over Atkinson. Your logic is if my uncle had a fanny he'd be my aunt.

Anyone saying Joe Root is the greatest English batsman ever is foolish, you can't compare eras. But he's the best nearly every single person alive on the planet has seen for England.

Joe public won't have a scooby doo who Atkinson and Brook are. They will know more likely know Joe Root and is it's a popularity contest of which Root has done the most impressive thing in English cricket this year which is become our all time top scorer.

He's done that also while being England top run scorer in the year and scoring 6 centuries in a year. No Englishman has ever scored 7 in a year which he has a chance to do next week.

Brook didn't play in India either and so we've no idea how his average would have held up there. Root averaging 56 even with a tour there

The sort of people that vote in these competitions aren't really your proper sports fans though.

So your casual tele watching people who would have been glued to their tellies for the Olympics and fawning over Keely win. Whereas they won't really know who Jude Bellingham is.

Steve James in the Times today is suggesting Bethell to open ahead of Crawley.

Interesting idea, Crawley is in a rut and Bethell has looked very calm even against the moving ball. He’s certainly proved me wrong

Interesting stat. No top 3 bat in history (any country) has averaged as low as Crawley from the same or more innings. Even Kraigg Brathwaite

If you can bat 3, you can open. Only concern would be losing the size difference and right/left combination as both factors have helped mess with bowlers lengths and line
