Pakistan v England 3rd Test

Pope - 55 runs at 11 for the tour
32 average for the year
26 average since that 196 knock
33 career average from 52 tests
29.97 average away from home (37 at home)
21 average in 2nd innings (800 runs and 196 came in 1 knock)

Nothing stacks up numbers wise for him to stay in the team

Feel like we need an anchor at 3, like Trott was

Someone show the selectors this
Yeah a superior batter than Pope or Duckett is definitely required. I think Duckett would do better than pope at 3, reaching a bit for an opener then, Lees is on the heap, Jennings possibly too far removed now. Neither really excelled.

Pope got a big one v ireland too which is a figure booster.

I think Pope could play lower down but we’d then be moving others around, and the balance is off. Stokes to 3 and just tell him to block it? These would bring Jonny B back though

We’re just not as good as we think we are are we?

Root is world class, Brook and Smith probably will be. The rest of them are has-beens and never will bes.

It’ll be 5-0 to Australia again next year despite all the brash talk and bull shit that will be talked prior.

At least they’ve saved me from setting an alarm for half 5 tomorrow morning.

Piss poor, pathetic and pitiful throw in any other adjective that starts with p.

There, that’s my rant for today.

That’s exactly the problem. We’d all like someone better. It’s when you start looking at the who that it all falls apart.

With Pope we’re looking at moving up the only man in the top six who’s even more of a walking wicket than he is just now, or recalling someone who has had chances and got even worse numbers, or trying some unknown.

As for Duckett, he’s pretty much the only opener we’ve had averaging 40 since Cook retired. So who is better?

Duckett is under-rated if anything, scores quickly and has a test average of 41. He's the best opener we've had for ages.

Crawley and Pope are more up for debate, however both are still young-ish, have scored big knocks in Test cricket and are fancied on Australian pitches. Doubt either are going anywhere until after the next Ashes series at the earliest.

It's not like they're keeping obvious talent out the side anyway, people advocating for the return of Jennings and Lees seem to have forgotten that they've had their chances and both average 24/25 in Tests, which is significantly worse than the lads in the team now.

Disappointing day but no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Ive noticed too with Pope that a lot of the time he gets in but then just contributes to get himself out.

91 innings and out approx 33 times between 10 and 45.......

His scoring is just shite for a number 3.....The 2 shots he has played this test are just awful....shows lack of judgement in flight of ball

His dismissal today was awful his technique is so lacking for test cricket. He’s jabbing at the ball plays with hard hands is a poor judge of line and length he’s not good enough full stop.

But will get numerous more chances as his face seems to fit it’s become far to comfortable for certain players.

You are never going to be a great test side when 2 of your top 3 average 32 and 34.

Good figures for Ahmed there.

Now this is when we need to see our batsmen step up, in a 2nd innings to decide the series. Let's see how many of them take some responsibility.
Agree, very good figures.

Leach very poor. Bashir about average given the overs bowled and the track.

I am starting to think long term and for the Ashes it's Ahmed or no spinner with Root filling in for me.

Both Leach and Bashir won't take a lot of wickets and both will get smashed on non turning surfaces.

Crawley and Pope do absolutely nothing for me mind.
I had hoped that Crawley would push on after a really good Ashes but he hasn’t. He was okay in India, reaching 50 a few times but never converted. He now looks like he’s reverted back to the old Zak Crawley - you just have absolutely no faith that he will score runs. An average of 32 after 50 Tests says it all.

Pope should’ve been put out to pasture years ago. You want someone coming out at 3 who is a calming presence, not someone who is jittery and jumping all over the crease. I’m absolutely sick of the sight of the bloke to be honest.

Stokes looks shot to bits now too.

Totally agree with your earlier post this team has an over inflated opinion of how good they are. Of this 11 that started today I would only say half this are test level 3 of the top 6. Smith has started really well Atkinson looks a great find definitely something there with young Ahmed.

Hoping Stokes finds something with a return to full fitness as he’s a passenger currently. Duckett, Root and Brook as the batsman good enough.

No-one here has suggests England are world beaters, but they are good though. Losing in Pakistan is no shame but i'm remaining hopeful something happens. Think it's a tough ask to win in sub-continent conditions and sometimes you just have to admit you were out played.

How many on here are laughing at the Luton Youtuber behaving just as bitter :p.. not a direct dig at you btw

Pope needs peddling though ;)

A day that started well, has ended up being a bit shit really.

Combination of good, solid batting and some questionable bowling / fielding / captaincy saw them take a good lead especially on this pitch.

Then it’s a rather familiar feel of our batting failing to deal with a little bit scoreboard pressure, on what is a tricky surface.

Need a big partnership between Root and Brook in the 1st session tomorrow. It isn’t over yet, a 150 lead and we’ve seen what their batsmen are capable of collapse wise.

I'm not going to berate England for their shortcomings today, they are fairly obvious. I'd rather congratulate Pakistan on their resilience.

No way on earth I thought they could turn around that 1st test spanking, dropping their best 3 players anarl. But they have, regardless of what happens tomorrow, hats off to them.

Alright, they manipulated the pitches in their favour but they haven't been unplayable. We just need to get better at playing spin on low and slow pitches.

I'll get shot down for this but I think they need to look at Jennings and McKinney.

Joe Clarke as well had a good year.

Can't imagine they'll be interested in Hameed, Lees and Burns
Thing is though, Lees was there at the start of Bazball and would score quick enough in this regime imo.. especially since coming out DCCC. Like the look of Duckett and Lees at the top.
