Why would they offer thousands to people they had no legal requirement to?

Employment laws have changed since then. Doubt you'd have much rights before a couple of year's service.

You'd imagine places like that would have a lot of staff on temporary contracts if the business was that volatile.

Mainly because lads had left good jobs as at the time Nissan were employing the best of the best staff from other industries. It wasn’t a bad thing as companies had to increase their wages to keep lads from going to Nissan
 
I actually remember one lad as I was training him up had only been there 6 weeks or so...

He got around £6k if I recall correctly and went back to his old job... :eek:

We could not believe they would pay people money to leave who had been there less than 6 months but it did happen...👍
 
Imagine how sick you'd be if you left a week before these offers were being handed out. Be like losing a winning lottery ticket.

NMUK didn't spend 500 million though that was the parent company NML.
Also the 500 million came from cash reserves (profits from previous year)
