A moon query from a non science person. I have googled and looked but not found what I am looking for.

I would like to know if the moon rises higher in the sky say over Paris than it does say over Aberdeen.

I did find out, I think, that lunar zenith is the term. My mother said that the moon doesn't rise so high the further north you go, and I wasn't sure, and I'd like to know.

Thank you.

The farther in the East it rises the higher it will be apparently, [Re: AI Overview on Google]

The moon orbits (roughly but not exactly) the equator. So if you are on the equator at the right time of night and of the year, it can appear overhead.

At the polls, this will never happen, it will always appear much lower in the sky.

So because Paris is closer to the equator than Aberdeen, it will indeed appear higher in the sky.

I'm 80% sure that the answer is it depends. And that's because the moon's orbital plane around the earth is not on a plane that's perpendicular to the earth's spin axis (I could be wrong). So when you work out the geometry it will depend on the time of year and time of month.

Those versed in astronomy will give you a more precise answer.

Great, the key piece of information.

Very impressive.

(However, did you not get one where it was half hidden? 😉)

The moon's orbit is inclined at about 5° to the earth's orbit. So with the earth's polar inclination of 23½° it could be overhead at a maximum of 28½° north or south at some time or other.

Further to my previous response, yes, the further south you go the higher the moon appears, just like the sun, because the moon orbits nearer the equator.
