Wilson Isidor - compendium thread

Where do you draw the line on that then? Like, is the *only* barometer for wanting people involved with the club that they make us win more?

No moral stuff at all?
In this case the player is innocent in it all. I couldn’t care any less about anything other than him coming here and being successful.

Players like Mason Greenwood on the other hand, I wouldn’t want anywhere near the club, regardless of how good he is.

That’s the line you’re asking for I guess?

I'm pretty sure they are owned by Gazprom, who are Russian state owned as a majority. All profits made by the Gazprom corporate family will be pumped back into the Russian war machine. I would like to club to avoid any deals with them. Nothing against the player. Just funds going to the parent club.

Fair enough - so if we're paying money and getting around sanctions and giving money to Russia (don't know enough of details) then you're okay with that?

As long as it helps us win games?

I hope he's just taking the piss and having fun, because it's scary that he might actually believe that.
I was going to have a laugh for a bit longer but it's concerning how many people actually think I could be like this hahaha

On a serious note I'm actually quite exciting about this signing and if he can find the form he had for Lokomotiv then we will have pulled off a seriously impressive deal - it's no wonder he's been of interest to top Ligue Un sides for the last few years.

I'm not 100% up to date on all of this, but if we're are finding a way to get around sanctions, or if we're paying money to Russian clubs, it is a bit grim mind.

Also, trying to paint this a narrative of us "saving" a player is giving us far, far too much credit

There’s nothing to “get around” here.

There seems to be a real misconception around the sanctions and what they are. Mainly because the media makes lazy reference to “sanctions against Russia”.

There are no all-encompassing, blanket “sanctions against Russia”. Hundred of British, EU and US companies still do legal business with Russian counterparts and/or related to Russia every day.

There are:

(i) certain trade/sector specific sanctions - such as the import ban on Russian oil, gas, and luxury goods.

(ii) specific, listed people (mainly oligarchs and politicians) and companies in Russia, which are (a) subject to an asset freeze in the UK and EU, and/or (b) “specially designated nationals” in the US. It is illegal for any UK, EU or US person or company (depending on which jurisdiction they are subject to) to do business with any of the listed Russian people or companies.

There is no sector/trade specific ban on football transfers. Similarly - Zenits owners - Gazprom - are NOT on the UK or EU asset freeze list.

Provided no other party involved is on the asset freeze or SDN lists (eg a specific bank that’s listed), there is no sanctions issue here.

And to be frank - the idea that SAFC would complete a transfer without taking detailed legal advice and being certain that there’s no sanctions risk, is for the f***ing birds.

If they're owned by Gazprom, then aye I'd be disappointed if we're doing business with them. Bad craic.

Pretty sure there's no mechanism that would allow a transfer of funds to Russia, so either sanctions are being circumvented or there is no payment to the club. Don't know... like everyone else.

Just gonna say it but ... Is that celebration throwing a grenade! He clearly condones the murder of Ukrainians and I expect there to be lots of tension between him and Rusyn.

Well hasn't this thread brought the tin foil hat wearers out....what the fuck

If there is a fee involved how would that be paid, considering the actual and existing financial sanctions regime?
