Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

We will get him but we will pay what we value him at. Loads of DoFs on here just saying pay them what they want, class let’s lay over the odds for everyone that’s worked well in the past

I don't think that's what people are saying at all. They're saying if we've identified him as being the one why have we not managed to get it over the line before Mbappe got involved and took over? It's went on for absolutely ages. It should have been our main target since it was obvious Rusyn, Burstow, Hemir, Mayenda weren't ready or working out. It also sounds from the journalist who's commented that we're trying to get him on the cheap.

Also apart from Will Grigg I'm not that sure who we've overplayed for at the time rather than in hindsight as they haven't worked out as you suggest. Do you mean Rusyn, Hemir, Hjelde?

I don't particularly think overpaying for a player has ever really been the issue. Them not being that good on arrival is usually the problem and thus that then looks like we've overpaid.

Agree to disagree I’ve seen people saying just get it done, how do we do that without just paying what they want?

People are frustrated, but not everyone is saying that. They've Identified a forward and again can't push it through, ha ing needed a striker for yonks and been going on with this one all summer.

You can't just keep thinking that's being unlucky.

Source?
Not even warm then?

 Oh that imposter, has he taken over from rubbery like?
I’ll get you an invite into the breakfast club. Say nowt to anyone

Like I’ve said we will get him but just not at silly money

This is the bit i struggle with the most. Surely it's so much more efficient to buy before we sell. The moment we sell a Clarke for £20m+, clubs will immediately add an extra few million onto their asking prices. We would do exactly the same if a club came for our players after just making a huge sale. I expected us to bring in a couple of players for £4m ish this summer knowing there would be a sale coming later on to cover it.

We will end up in a position where the owner seizes the opportunity to make a big profit on a sale, then naively goes back to the original approach of replacing for around £1m to try and repeat the process again. I can see us making great progress until we lose a big player...

Exactly right.

It would have been astute to bring in players we wanted early, knowing then clubs cannot inflate asking prices on the basis of seeing us sell our stars.

I think we are not as cute in the market as some make out. speakman in particular, we have a list full of "multi million" stars, and then faff about ensuring the side has balance.

Transfer offers aren't just plucked out of thin air like. Whether we were interested and went to Mendy's agent or vice versa, there'll have been a discussion about how much his club wanted for him. If it's true the offer was acceptable to previous owners but not the current ones it could be that we would never have been interested in taking it further if previous owners wanted as much as current. Given they sold another of their strikers this summer he's probably worth more to them than the fee they'd get.

Personally I'm not arsed whether we sign this fella or not, but we need to sign someone who knows where the goal is. Complete false economy to be spunking transfer, agent and signing on fees, as well as wages, on mediocre players season after season trying to save a few quid.

I’m saying squad is worth £100 million 🤷🏻‍♂️
Yes and I’m not debating that. It’s the further comment I’m debating with you…
Unless you’re now saying you’re not commenting on KS recruitment? If not then no idea what you could be meaning…

“so the squad is easily worth £100 million, however we can’t admit that and have to use it to slag Speakman off

It shouldn't come into the equation but there's very clearly a lot of indecision when it comes to recruiting strikers and it doesn't look like anyone at the club can spot one. Even the loans they've got in from PL clubs have been absolutely stinking, so if they can't even get a striker on loan who is even semi-useful, then you can understand why they'd be hesitant spending a chunk of the budget on a permanent one.
Maybe they could pay Lee Johnson and his mate a consultancy fee to find us another RS?

They don't need to be expensive signings though. Clarke was rumored to be around 3m with a sell on clause. Ballard 2m with a sell on clause. Those figures for players are pretty decent amounts and were paid when we'd just come up out of league one, which turned out to be good investments.

Would we really be breaking the bank if that was upped to say 5m for a proven striker? It's not like we need another 3 or 4 players at that price. It's should be about just adding that bit of quality now, that could really see the side flourish.

I'm not saying Mendy is 5m btw, but judging by how long it's taken and if we're still interested. It looks like his fee is going to be much more than the initial 700k that had been mooted.
exactly that - no rational person is saying abandon "the model" and $punk 5million on a 32 year old with no resale value.

Its about investing in talent with good sell on value, as its always been, but now the starting point should be higher - so the odd £5million pound signing, which should be less risky.
