Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Was it the Hylton Bridge opening where young lads sped over on their bikes before the ceremonial party could do the first crossing? That was funny.
I’ll be queuing up to go over when this opens ( if not before 😉).

Should leave as is now and use for Acapulco type diving sessions or the Red Bull flight challenge, launch mad hang gliders trying to land in Keel Square.

Class that!

Probably a bit late in the project, but the completed sections look quite deep and could be filled in and used as a canal acquaduct. Leave the Dunn Cow about 2.40 and catch a gondola across to the match.
Gondola? You’re a bit posh. 😜

Four empty very kegs, some rope, scaffolding boards and four pallets. A sort of scrap heap challenge. Chuck in a couple of brooms sticks and the remnants of the stock Ha’way the Flags had and it’ll be wind powered eco friendly.

I'm not sure I understand what's going to happen. It looks like there'll be quite a drop at the end so are they building a slope there seeing as it's for cycling as well? I was under the impression you'd be able to walk or cycle off the path at either end and onto the bridge at the same level. I read somewhere they're pouring concrete into it so that'll make it even higher

Its going to be flat straight onto Easington Street. They will be joining steels and adding concrete deck onto where there is currently a drop but that isnt part of the current main deck install.

VolkerStevin installs first two sections of Sunderland’s £44M high-level footbridge

09 Aug, 2024 By

The first two sections of the £44M New Wear Footbridge in Sunderland have been lifted into place.
A sea-going barge delivered the two steel sections, spanning a combined 83m, from Victor Buyck’s fabrication yard in Belgium on Sunday (4 August).
Contractor VolkerStevin worked day and night from Tuesday to Thursday morning (6-8 August) to install the sections.
VolkerStevin senior project manager Mike Rimmer said: “I’m really proud of what the team has achieved, with challenging high tides and the sites tight geography, successfully lifting these two sections into place has required flawless coordination between our lifting and marine teams to ensure these lifts could be completed within the narrow window of opportunity.”
The barge is on its way back to Belgium to collect the final two deck units. VolkerStevin is using strand jacking so that the main span can now be lifted in a single 105m long unit.
The new 250m long bridge, across the River Wear, is part of a plan to help revitalise Sunderland city centre by developing the riverside area and boosting connectivity.

Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, said: “It was a spectacle to behold seeing the first two sections of the new Wear Footbridge arrive at Port of Sunderland.
“The new Wear Footbridge is the linchpin of our overall plan to regenerate this important part of the city so it is fantastic to see yet another piece of the jigsaw fall into place as it begins to rise from the ground and take shape.”
It is part of the Riverside Sunderland masterplan, which will see workspace for over 8,000 people and homes for 2,000 residents delivered over a decade.
The bridge is expected to open in August 2025.

VolkerStevin project director Mark Denham explained to NCE that the first few months of the scheme, which started in March 2023, were taken up largely by temporary works.

“There was a lot of material to be removed – clearing the site and bringing in lots of aggregates to form working platforms,” he said.
Its south abutment is on top of a cliff, while the north pier .
AtkinsRéalis worked on the bridge design. Its alignment follows the orientation of the Keel Line, a 292m long public artwork referencing the 8,102 ships built in the city’s shipyards on the south end of the bridge.
