Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

From and including the Jan 23 transfer window prior to this transfer window only Jobe and Ekwah have been regular first team starters and can be considered as a success. In that time Speakman has signed around 16 players and wasted millions on the likes of Mundle, Hjelde, Rusyn, Hemir, Mayenda.

The CF situation still remains unresolved. We will sign the cheaper option because that is the mentality of the club. I hope I am totally wrong but we won’t pay for the likes of young Stansfield, or Shankland or Hardie who are far less of a risk in signing a 30 year old French CF who has no resale value.

Browne when asked why he signed for us…. “ Because Sunderland are one of the biggest clubs in England” yeah he’s right pity the owner won’t pay for quality.
how many of those you list were intended to be first team starters last season and how many were for the future? You dont regard ballard as a success? I dont know why anyone would get excited about signing shankland not done it in a proper league..he isnt quality. ryan hardie had half a good season at championship level-he may be good or he may not. The issue with stansfield wasnt one of money-we know this,
We know the current ownership are quite happy to sign players, including strikers, with no resale value. they did it with defoe. they did it with corey evans and alan browne in other positions.

Ballard was signed before Jan 23, you can talk all day about if you rate this player or that, there is NO excuse for not sorting out the CF position, none.

I have praised Speakman many times with previous signings, his signings since Jan 23 have not imho been anywhere near good enough with the exception of the two I mentioned.
yes that was a bad window-no one disputes that..the head of recruitment is the person who identifies the players..nothing to do with speakman...but the strategy underpinning it was flawed as mowbray highlight about a year ago...
he was fired..and many on this board rejoiced..

Well I wasn’t one of them. My many posts from Jan 23 was in full support of TM when then and in Aug last year when the man again was pleading with the club to bring in an experienced CF and DCM player ( which still isn’t sorted as it is not Browne’s best position). Soeakman lost all credibility with me when he replaced TM with Beale and tried to tell us he had just witnessed the best world class training session he had ever seen. The signing of every player at this club is approved by Speakman and I repeat he has failed massively since Jan 23.

browne is a very capable no.6 at championship level..I suspect as he has gotten older it may now be his best position and he wont have quite the mobility for the no.8 role.
Speakman doesnt have final say on transfers..he doesnt even have final say on tranfer strategy...

He’s only 29, he should still have mobility to play the number 8 role for a couple of years.

Absolute and utter rubbish he is the DOF, he plays a major role agrees the strategy with the owner. He may require ultimate approval from KLD to sign the player but he as DOF brings them to the club, or are you saying KLD does all the negotiating and Speakman has no say!!

He's 29 not 35 I'm sure he can move fine you haven't even heard of real Madrid players so doubt you have even seen him play Walter.

no KLD sets the straegy woith the broard of directors..Speakman isnt on the baord. Speakman role is to implement the strategy he is given. I doubt KLD approves each individual signing..as KLD doesnt work at SAFC it would take ages to finalise anything if he had to approve each deal. And as the bulk of Speakman's role and experience is not transfers..I doubt he has time to be doing as much as you imply..mowbray picked the head of recuritment...that guy idneitifes the players...Speakman just does the negotiation..

No player is signed by the club without Speakman’s approval, fact

Recruitment is done by Stuart Harvey thoufh

I am aware who our Head of Recruitment is,the point I am making is Speakman decides who we ultimately do and don’t sign.He has rightly been praised for several signings prior to Jan 23, however since then he has massively failed imho.

They’ve said for ages it is a group of people involving the head of recruitment, the head coach and speakman who all contribute to the final decision.

I can imagine speakman will have the deciding vote should they disagree as he is the most senior but to say he ultimately decides in all cases probably isn’t a true reflection of the situation.

The odds of our gamble compared to Ipswich's on getting promoted were much worse, im sure if we were 2nd we would have went for it. My main point is you can't compare us to Ipswich at that point in time, they were in a position to bet the house, we weren't.
If we’d bought a decent striker last summer we could have got to 2nd. A further one would have cemented it, as per Ipswich.
Anyway, the club have assured us lessons have been learned - getting Browne in and being linked with strikers like Mendy suggests they have been.
