Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Brilliant that. Has the colour been edited or are those buildings that were purple now grey?

Or am I colour blind and need to see the optician?
Aye, but I didn't realise how much. I film in a flat profile then touch it up a bit but I just put on a preset today as I was in a hurry. I've had to go back and look at the original footage and they are definitely purple. Panic over, you're not mad, it's me.
yeah I noticed that and was looking for any movement on the site on the video but guess that was filmed on Sunday @RestlessNatives ?

the council are delivering the project in house now arent they? dunno when tho
No, this morning about 6am. Don't ask how but I accidentally got up at five so thought I might as well kill an hour and have a walk down and do some filming.

It’s great stuff mate! I just wondered if there’d perhaps been a bit of progress on the housing.

With regards to art work around the bridge, these are in storage somewhere in Sunderland, they where commisioned by the council at the same time as the vaux dray and horses, but have never been installed yet, so I wonder if they are going to be on either side of the new bridge.
Were they commissioned or did Ray Lonsdale make them hoping for a commission? I don’t know btw.
How will the air draft for the low level bridge affect the proposal for the shipyard?
There is no proposal for the shipyard.

Aren't North Star showing an interest in using Pallion as a maintenance centre for their vessels? There is also talk of interest in building a barge there.

I feel showing an interest is going to far, the save the shipyard lot are pushing it

A huge week on our High Level Wear Footbridge project here at with the South Pier complete and formwork stripped. The North Pier final pour was also carried out this week and will be stripped in the coming days.

It's been a huge challenge for the team to get to this point, but to be on programme for the bridge install is amazing considering everything that has been thrown at them.

Hopefully the week is rounded off in style with success at the Construction Excellence awards tonight in the Innovation category.

Hence my original question, will there be sufficient clearance to allow the North Star ships to clear pass under the low level footbridge?

They wouldn't be able to get up the river past Wearmouth Bridge it's silted up so much. You can practically walk across in a pair of waders in places at low tide.

Will depend on the design of the bridge? If they design a ballast bridge or similar then clearance won’t be an issue. If it’s fixed then it could be however there doesn’t appear to be any design for it yet. Equally there has been limited demand for the shipyard in probably 30-40 years therefore if they built a bridge is it worth the extra expense of retaining the clearance?

North Star have distanced themselves from the statement saying their comments were “taken out of context”.

I assume any low level bridge would need to be a swing design to allow river traffic to pass. I'm not even sure the plans go that far yet?

That's what I told my colleagues when they told me that they proposed building a barge in Sunderland. They didn't realise, I would think the dock entrances at Pillion are pretty silted up now as well. Of course if someone comes up with realistic proposal and funding to reopen the ship building facilities the river can be dredged.

Hadn't seen that, thanks.

Clearance below* the Queen Alexandra Bridge is 26m. Clearance below the new footbridge is 25m apparently.

*Clearance below is summat that's used on official shipping charts etc.

They are. Saw it when I was riding my bike over the QA bridge last week.

The cost of dredging the river was summat like £10m. It cost £3m or summat to do bit from Wearmouth Bridge to the piers for the tall ships.

great footage! y'know, for a city that has a reputation as being "post-industrial" it's actually really green and beautiful looking west along the riverside. It'll be fantastic down there once they sort out the park and get people making use of it again.

I'd love to see more active use of the river though, paddle boards, pedalos like they have in Prague, a ferry linking the marina to Washington etc. etc.

and for someone who doesn't live in the city anymore, can someone help me with what's going up now on the Vaux site... the 2 cores going up near to galley's gill bridge, is that the new eye hospital? and the 2 tall cranes next to that, eye hospital as well or something else?
