T20 World Cup 2024

Australia in the field had plans and bowlers who stuck to them. We had a gut feel and bowlers who couldn't/didn't bowl to any plan or the conditions.
44 off 2 overs from Jacks and Wood in the pp gave us too much to do for some of our indifferent batters. Our numbers 3&4 made 17 from 23, theirs 63 from 50.
End of an era.

"Zampa has done well. Think I'll chuck the ball to Dave Warner to have a twirl"
We should have had a plan to attack Zampa, Stoinis and Maxwell. Instead we had Bairstow fiddling around, lots dot balls and singles, not leaving his crease to attack and no boundaries and only 7 runs from 13 balls.

Our chances completely died during his innings.

Team needs wholesale changes. Bairstow, Ali and Jordan are well past their best. Livingstone’s a leg side slogger that bowls a bit. Wood should stick to tests.

Also the Buttler/Mott combo has to be disbanded. Jos is a poor captain and we need a more hands-on coach than Mott. This team isn’t good enough to run itself anymore.

How many world class white ball players are in that side? Buttler and Rashid I’d say. Archer yes if he can stay fit.

Still picking the likes of Bairstow man.

There should have been changes after the disastrous ODI WC where we turned up unprepared just a few days before the start, used 3 ODI games against Ireland to play fringe players rather than get the squad together, bowled first regardless of conditions, looked like we didnt know how to play ODI at all, batted completely recklessly and didnt seem to realise its hot in India.

Despite England admitting mistakes, alarm bells were already ringing before this tournament started what with Buttler's comments about prep games should not intefer with the IPL, Jonny Bairstow's fantastic team bbq and, despite admitting that we were poorly prepared for the ODI WC, we've now come into this WC with far fewer prep games than the last T20 WC and again flew in just a few days before it starts. Add on top of this that we discarded Malan and Willey straight after the ODI WC despite them being two of our better players at that tournament. Topley was our best bowler at the ODI WC but we didnt play him last night.

Its ironic following the review by Strauss aimed at making England the best team in the World across all formats that we've flopped woefully at the ODI WC and now started so badly at the T20 WC. We've gone backwards not forwards and the cause is little if anything to do with Strauss' findings but instead weak leadership in the England cricket team and amateurish preparation and management.

It was inexcusable to bowl Jacks second over.

Travis Head in the IPL has been smashing it from ball one, to give him a left hander the short boundary against a bowler who hardly bowls for England had not a grain of logic.

Buttler rightly slaughtered for that, set the whole tone of the game!

I know it’s easy in hindsight but when I seen him come on for the second over could not believe it.

Wood wrong bowler totally on that wicket the 3 sixes he was hit for early were not really big shots, even though went for six there was that much pace on just had to help it on its way.

Bairstow been one his fans however like a few people have said he seems a different cricketer, since his injury would drop him now, he an opener anyway in this format and no space there.

All is not lost as in previous World Cup wins for England (all 3 of them) we have had to come back from losses.

Buttler and Salt as good as any opening partnership in the tournament, need Curran and Topley back in for me as Curran at 8 is very deep batting line up, Curran obviously out of form a little bit with his bowling but taking everything account he a better option than Jordan for me and Topley for Wood.

It was one bad game after we looked good in the two games against Pakistan, we were massively on the back foot in this game after just 20/30 mins of the game, it was lost there and then imo.

We can come back but always concerning when it partially out of your hands.

Just looking at the permutations to qualify.

You would expect us to beat the two minnows. If Scotland beat Oman it would all hinge on NRR between us and Scotland as Australia should beat Scotland.

However there are a couple of factors that could also work against us. One is the weather and the other is the possibility of Australia throwing the Scotland game just to piss us off.

I rate Jacks and Salt alongside Buttler. Rashid is excellent.

The irony is we've got some world class players who arent playing. Topley's been recenly averaging 19 bowling but wasnt picked.

I think Malan and Willey are world class but England discarded them. Woakes is also world class with a bowling average of 16 in T20I but not available.

Stokes would have been great as a T20 player and captain instead of Buttler but we play too much international cricket and put too much demands on him for him to be available. Instead he's playing golf.

Echo the above.

Ali, Jordan and Bairstow are past their sell by. Rashid probably okay for now (more through lack of options - M Parkinson?). Livingstone can stay IMO - does 3 elements of the game quite well.

Harry Brook seems a bit wasted down the order, not helped by fitting 4 openers into the top 4.

I would have Topley in for Wood. And Jamie Smith in the squads going forward.

Quite happy with Stokes and Woakes missing out but Malan baffles me. Topley should also have played.

Bowling a part time spinner in the power play, with only 2 men out, is ludicrous.

How can you have a game plan and then one over into the match you switch to a ‘gut call’.

From then on we were chasing the game.

Wood’s sheer pace doesn’t frighten top order batsmen, so he needs to be used at the right time, or left out

I don't get it at all. OK Ali only went for 3 runs the first over but surely you have a set plan. Ali then Archer or Wood or whatever.

Oh our spinner has only gone for 3, I'll mix it up and bowl Rashid or even Livingstone. Jacks! How, why? He's 7th choice man, bowling in the power play. Crazy.

Jacks or even Brook should only bowl if 2 other bowlers are having an absolute nightmare or injuries.
Brook should never bowl. Jacks actually can. Slightly harsh on Jacks putting him in the same category as Brook.
