Getting in to playing at an older age

We won a game today!

I’m still in shock to be honest. We won the toss and decided to field. We bowled the opposition out for… 22! It was absolutely insane. Their innings was over and done inside an hour.

Needless to say I didn’t get a bat today. We knocked the total off rather quickly despite losing 3 wickets ourselves.

Then down the clubhouse for a pint in the sunshine. Lovely.

Cracking stuff. We won our first league game of the season yesterday too. I didn't bat or bowl but great to be part of a winning team 👍

It’s good to see soo many players wanting to play at an older age,

I’m playing tonight in a friendly game going to try have a bowl and get my eye back in

Never thought I’d play sports again after multiple surgeries. Hip, knee hand and wrist sounds like a shite song 😂

I’m still intending to sign and play this season, there’s been a few people helping me who didn’t need to!

I’ve genuinely been thinking this too.

I was decent at a young age, had a bowling average of 14 and batting of 20odd. Abit different because it was split in pairs batting for 4 overs and bowling for 4. Teams start on 200 and lose 8 runs for a wicket. That was under 11s- under 14s I think.

Did ok in the “normal game” had trials for Durham twice in easington school but felt nowhere near the standard. And fell completely out of love with it at 17.

Not picked a bat or ball up now for 14 year but really miss it like.

I live in Livingston, Scotland now. Went I watch a game recently and the standard was top notch, few u19s for Scotland were playing etc.

Really want to get back into a thirds or something but I feel so anxious about it every time I consider it, it’s almost not worth the stress I’d get. But I’d enjoy it if I did

Just picked my stuff up from my mums house. Might need your help with my bat @SAFC2403
The living room cover drive is still there boys  So which teams actually need players around Sunderland? Silksworth is closest, but they seem sorted.

Just do it mate. I got back into playing when I was living in Dunbar, lovely cricket scene up there in the ESCA league. Livingston had a few teams iirc. You’d 100% not be out of your depth and I’d be amazed if weren’t welcomed with open arms. Clubs are always grateful for additional players.

I'm playing for Silksworth now - we have 2 teams on saturdays, an academy side on sundays(we do have a few adults in that team) and a more social side on Thursdays. New players always welcome mate - we net on Tuesdays when games arent on (and if its not pissing down!!)
Is there anywhere local where you can hire a bowling machine and have a net on your own?
chester le street will let you hire bowling machines, think theres also one at Durham uni as well not sure on pricing though

Get down to your local club and give it a go - whats the worst that can happen?

Take the plunge mate. I’d never picked up a bat or ball in my life until April this year. I was anxious I’d be shit and let the team down but the lads have been fantastic and I’m really enjoying it. I get such a buzz on a Saturday morning before a game.

I’ll send you a proper message later this week. Realistically Silksworth is the only one that works, the rest require a fair bit of travel, but you guys seem sorted for players? The thirds ever struggle for numbers?

We do at various points during the season - plus we have 3 teams on a weekend - we are committed to trying to get everyone a game and limit lads playing 3-4 times a week.

Are you playing on Saturday? We’re at your place
I'm not but I'm playing tomorrow night at Kimblesworth in cup match. Going to Leeds to see a band Sat. See you in the reverse fixture later in season, 24 th Aug at your place 👍
