Durham v Birmingham bears🐻 T20 (h)

As I said earlier I called it a day after seven overs of Warwickshire's reply and there were hundreds streaming out, many shaking their heads in disbelief/disappointment at what they had seen. This was 8.20pm - not even two hours of play.
Can see future T20 attendances being well under 1,000 as nobody could possibly want to suffer the uncompetitive dross that is currently being served up. On the other hand it's a tight competition with only 2 points for a win so a few wins could turn it around. However that seems impossible based on what has occurred in the 2 opening games.

Thanks for the quid ticket can't remember name who told us about it on here....As a first time visitor to your ground. Blimey an oversized county ground. Not really a test venue is it?? Very much like Cardiff a soulless bowl. 6000 good attendance but at only a quid blimey that's poor really. Thanks for the easy 2 points.

Speaking of a quid a go, your mam and sister made £25 while you were out at the cricket 👍

He's from up where I am in county Durham stand. They had planned it with a bet

A CD Ultra? :o

I got pelters last night for saying Turner is rubbish but he has done nothing at all for us.

I watched the end of Somersets run chase they were blasted 6s allover the place Gregory came in and took all of 2 balls to clear the rope.

I watched that too, great game, then I flicked on to see Sussex win from almost nowhere with a bye off the last ball.

With us, it’s really tough to understand how a side can be so utterly shite at a format throughout its entire lifespan despite enjoying massive success in other formats. Since it’s inception, we’ve won more County Championship titles than we’ve made T20 finals days and we’ve won more 50 Over cups than we’ve made T20 Finals. We’re clearly one of ‘the big clubs’ when it comes to domestic success in recent years, but we simply cannot seem to crack it at T20 level. Even mediocre counties have had a few years here and there of T20 dominance. Mind, I’ll always maintain that I’d rather see us being better at proper cricket than this format.

Were we undercooked? The lads have a full week now to get some proper practice in and talk about what they want to do better at. It’s easy for us to laugh it off, but it’s still important to see the team competing because it’s imperative we get bums on seats.

One thing is for sure, they can’t perform much worse.

I suppose the saving grace is that T20 is one of the most ‘you’re only as good/bad as your last game’ formats/sports around. If one bloke goes berserk in the next game and turns in a match winning performance then we’re right back in the hunt.

It was as a great evening, until the cricket started.

Got a couple of free Under 16 tickets (NHS offer for £10 tickets on Tickets For Good & you get 1x adult and 1x junior with the code) going for the Yorkshire game on 21 June if anyone wants them.

Bellend was sat with his mates in front of us…..tbf he had a bit pace about him, was more disappointed he extended the game as was happy to wander off to the boozer after such a poor effort with the bat
As much as I wanted to lamp the tw@ he did indeed manage to get a good pace on him. I thought it was particularly funny that despite having 10 or so security in the stand they were utterly hopeless

For me it seems that our approach to T20 is massively out of date. We seem to aim to restrict a side to 140-160 and then hope we can chase down the runs. It's clear that our current line up lack natural six hitters/power batsman that are the norm in most sides, which is reflected in scores of 9-10 runs an over across the country. I can't see this Durham lineup regularly hitting 180+.

Another thing I've noted from the first couple of games is the age of the Durham side compared to our opponents. 7 of Durham's starting 11 are aged 30+ (Lancs had 3 and Warks 2). We don't seem to be able to develop young white ball specialists like a lot of the other counties, which could be argued has led to us falling so far behind in T20s.

Embarrassing batting performance, thought we were in for a treat after the 1st over
I thought bears batted within themselves to knock it off in 16th over, but still looked way above us with bat and ball

Somerset looked pretty good again last night and will surely be there and thereabouts, have had a bet at 7/1 for them to win it again.

Bat really deep and in Smeed and Banton have two openers who more times than not will get you off to a quick start.

Added to the fact other teams especially Lancs will be affected by players at the World Cup think really good chance for Somerset to win it again this season

Very kind offer mate, hopefully someone takes you up on it.

Based on the last two games, you might need to include some free beers for them though

This raises a point I made with my dad before the match last night. I’ve been coming to T20 since 2016 and every year we’ve sat through season after season of decline at this club.

What it shows is that Durham can’t raise young, talented white ball players and they’re basically left to buy the scraps from other teams. Last night shows they can’t bat or field and were totally outclassed by a team that took over 10 overs to beat 101. Stupid lazy bowling and poor batting tactics see us lose every single evening to the same fowls: lifting the ball up and watching as the fielders barely move to catch us out.

The academy (if you could even call it that) is clearly woeful in every sense of the word and fails to do it’s most basic duty of recruiting and raising youngsters. Contrast that with the academy of light.

Last year we (and I) blamed Franklin but this goes far deeper than that. We have a clear skills gap here.

The atmosphere in the ground is woeful as well. We have a player getting banned for betting but slap advertisements for betting companies and even let one sponsor the new livestream all over the ground.

People moan on and say “ah well it’s not proper cricket” which is fine but remember it’s the only format that consistently fills the bar and stands.

Not. Good. Enough.
