Ship Badge to come back permanently?

I'm a Geordie and not scared to hide it so hate the fact the Mags have tried to take it over as their own.

Quite a big peeve of mine, if I had to be honest, doesn't bother people outside the region using it though but the club should never embrace it imo.

Mags and Black Cats for me. Geordie, Mackem, Pit Yacker or whatever other local variants is where you're from and mostly your dialect.
I'm a proud Geordie. Always have been
Makem was a piss take.
Anyway, prefer the blue ship badge

True but in hindsight you probably won't find any so called new ground that was built as close to the city centre. Lots of things fell in place with the SOL, value for money materials, location, it was all good.
That Washington Nissan proposal would have been a disaster

There’s a reason most clubs are going back to old badges and that’s because new ones are shite and all look the same.

Liverpool gone back to the liver bird on their new kit. Arsenal back to a simple cannon, Man U to a simple devil on their third kit.

And in 25 years time, everyone will go back to the traditional crest.

Mind those arsenal,Liverpool & man utd efforts are too big & look ridiculous they'd be alright if badge was half the size

The black cat has never been part of the badge? The ship badge is a massive part of our heritage having the badge in the 70d, 80s and 90s along with the shipyard heritage of the city. Thst era of football is what a large part of the world will remember and it’s no coincidence the likes of Liverpool Man City etc have gone back to badges from that era

It was in an earlier badge but the 70/80's were a terrible time for the club. We were crap just like now really and has some real lows.

- History here and there's a news article basically on the same discussion but about a black cat instead.

Also I keep seeing this most clubs have gone back to their old badges but they haven't. Man City pretty much always had the same badge since 1926. It's the 1990's badge which totally went off trend and was crap. Same with Liverpool which has used the Liverbird since it's existence. Most badges are redoing the existent one other than rubbish like that Leeds nonsense.

If it’s not broken don’t fix it.

I like the crest. Could it be made a little simpler for reproduction on garments possibly yes.

As much as I liked the ship badge in the 70s and 80s it is of that era. On retro stuff yes but not as our modern day crest / badge imho.

Maybe it's a Sunderland mentality to dismiss the history and heritage of the place

The same mentality that saw the town look like a bag of shit for decades when modern 60s and 70s architecture was considered progress over those awfully old fashioned Victorian buildings
The ship badge isn't our history, it was introduced in the same period as the shit architecture you talk about, along with flares, shirts with waff collars, and the Bay city rollers, a dreadful period for taste, the ship badge proves that. 👍

Man City and Liverpool have gone back to the 70s and 80s badge ? Fair enough on the black cat if this was on our original badge. Point is we shouldn’t be creating another badge but using one from our history and most people in football will recognise the ship one, and It’s no secret that allot of the younger generation like retro/nostalgia, maybe in 40 years time people will want the current one back

Retro is only good as it's retro though. If it suddenly becomes 'new' it's not cool anymore.

We need to move forwards rather than backwards imo. If I had to think of something Sunderland related, using the history, it's the cat on the ball which we decided to scrap. Similar to the Liverbird for Liverpool

It basically sums Sunderland AFC in one thing and if done well would look good. If you want to get a boat in there somewhere like Man City then fair play.

Not sure what the fuss is about, the 90’s badge was average at best and looks a bit cheap/basic. Can understand why the club would want to change to it as the costs of putting a simpler design on merchandise etc must be cheaper than the current badge which is a lot more detailed.

New badge looks so cobbled together it’s daft. It’s like they thought right we have four panels to fill, erm penshaw monument, the bridge and fuck it just fill the other two with red and white stripes.

And don’t get me started on the Latin, should we use the cities motto, nah let’s come up with some “profound” shite.
wonder what 'Get into them, fuck them up' is in Latin - that would be nice.

I think the time has come for a new badge, I think at 27 years the current badge is the longest in use design in the clubs history. (Classic ship badge was used for 20 years).

Personally i'd like to see newer redesign of the ship badge style , would not want us to go back to the old one.

Create a load of designs and get fan input.
These 2 comments sum it up for me. I prefer the old ship badge, a lot down to my age, as a kid I would draw that badge on anything and everything, school jotters, tech drawing folders etc.

Current one seems dated now. If there had to be a badge change, I would prefer a new badge, as going back to the old one shows a lack of progression and ideas in and around the club. No harm in re-using old elements of previous badges, but not 100% re-use for me.

Better revenue streams for the club having merch with different badges? All fans will never like one badge, and may gravitate to favour merch etc with their favourite? No harm in having a selection of badges to use both now and in the future.

What about a magpie in the cats mouth

Whatever happens it would be a mistake to create a completely new badge imo as it was when we create the current one

Can they not modernise the ship badge in some way? Make it look a bit more slick and fresh but with the same elements within it? I had a go at mocking one up a while back but didn't have the skills required to do it justice. Think I added the black cat into it instead of the ball. Surely we could get a design agency to produce some samples.

They could upgrade the old badge.

I don't mind the current badge, but I really hate harking back to old days and living in the past.

I really hope we don't just revert to the old badge.

Exactly. I don't get why so many people hark back to "the good old days", not just in football but life generally. It was shit on many levels.

Take the shield part of this including cat and ball maybe a black box at the top with S.A.F.C. embroidered in it and 9 stars around it (6 titles, 2 fa cups and world champs).
Although I reckon some people will have a fit coz the centre stripe is white 🤦

Some seem to hate it, some love it. That’s anything you care to choose.

We may well be looking at a refresh of the badge. Probably simplification. Then we’ll have an extra heritage badge for merchandising.
