Ship Badge to come back permanently?

So does that make me a Mackem Geordie or a Geordie Mackem?

Whatever you want to be. Point being “Mackems” is now widely regarded and used by the media and people inside / outside of the region for our fanbase.

It shouldn’t really bother anyone and it’s been commonly used since the mid 90s when referring to the club or supporters.

I don’t mind the current one, but it’s a bit of a McMansion where different elements have been cobbled together to try and make something grand but it just comes across a bit confused.

Ship badge is a clean, classic design. It’s simple and iconic, doesn’t look like anyone else’s, and the incorporation of the waves works really well.

Just go with that, or get the lad who does design for SAFC/England stuff make something new.

New badge looks so cobbled together it’s daft. It’s like they thought right we have four panels to fill, erm penshaw monument, the bridge and fuck it just fill the other two with red and white stripes.

And don’t get me started on the Latin, should we use the cities motto, nah let’s come up with some “profound” shite.

From memory it wasn’t particularly well received at the time along with the Stadium’s name.

Sir Bob left a fantastic legacy, but didn’t half do some pretentious things with the badge and stadium name.

Both went down like a led balloon I seem to remember!

True but in hindsight you probably won't find any so called new ground that was built as close to the city centre. Lots of things fell in place with the SOL, value for money materials, location, it was all good.

I think the time has come for a new badge, I think at 27 years the current badge is the longest in use design in the clubs history. (Classic ship badge was used for 20 years).

Personally i'd like to see newer redesign of the ship badge style , would not want us to go back to the old one.

Create a load of designs and get fan input.

probably is about time they replaced the latin scroll "in search of excellence" with something more appropriate to be fair

"In search of sustainability" maybe?

In search of excellence ..mmmm
Maybe we should incorporate a compass in the design, as we currently seem to be lost in the search? 😊

Prefer they simplified the current badge. Think the old one looks incredibly dated and not that special to go backwards to. Current design is busy and very intricate, so simplifying it makes most sense imo. Or blend the two and have the main body of the current crest instead of just red and white stripes on the old one
It's all the hierarchy have got... they don't want to prioritise buying a forward so they fob us off with nostalgia from the 80s/90s.

No one is saying that what you mention re cost and location wasn't good tbf. The poster was only criticising the badge and stadium name both of which rightly took plenty of stick at the time.

It was a mistake to move away from the ship badge imo, and it would be an even bigger mistake to create another new one. We went the only one to change badges but I think clubs realise that their brand is built on their heritage so we should be looking to this. The biggest clubs in the world have done this and either stuck to the same design or returned to designs they previously had, Man U and Barcelona has been constant, Liverpool gone back, Man City have gone back etc

Can see both of these perspectives.

At the time I felt Murray let us down in a few ways. Too obsessed with the mags and what was happening “up the road”, but not rich enough to blow them out of the water.

I think the issues with the badge and the stadium name come down to being a bit parochial and feeling self conscious about it. Just own it, we aren’t that lot and we don’t want to be.

In hindsight I can see he left us with excellent facilities and for a world class stadium at a fraction of the cost, without having to move to a retail park in some soulless suburb.

The ship isn't our heritage though, the black cat is the heritage hence our badge had it for years.

If we were called the Shiprights or something then it would make sense but it doesn't. We must be the only club that has a nickname which isn't in the badge and no I'm not counting the lions.

Nothing looks more cheap than the present one imo. Just a load of shite heraldry that many hoyed on badges in the 90s and the majority then got rid of.

We need something far simpler for branding purposes
Just the letters S.A.F.C. like we had on the shirts when we last won something. Maybe just in a line this tie, instead of stepped.

The black cat has never been part of the badge? The ship badge is a massive part of our heritage having the badge in the 70d, 80s and 90s along with the shipyard heritage of the city. Thst era of football is what a large part of the world will remember and it’s no coincidence the likes of Liverpool Man City etc have gone back to badges from that era

As much as I love thecship badge, and wouldn't mind having it back....

Now isn't the time. All that's wrong with the way the club has been run, and all that needs fixing and addressing... and they want to spend a fortune redoing all the signage, stationery, digital media etc?

Knowing these lot they'll probably make us into "Sunderland United" with a black and white badge.

Can we at least attempt to address the basics first?
