Is Boro a derby?

You state it “never has been “ just wondering how come you make that Conclusion . My first away game was at Boro early 60 s where on the train my uncle explained the meanings of Derby’s . Started working in every shipyard on Wear ,where football was the dominant conversation. Never heard anybody ever say it wasn’t a Derby . My uncle had a Collection of Echo’s and Football Echo’s from 50 s to 90 s where they are countless references to Derby games against Boro .
Read all the letters in Football Echo in that period ,where just before we played Boro and afterwards there loads of references to Derby game . Never came on one letter starting it wasn’t a Derby .
If someone thinks it’s not Derby I respect their opinion . However when people say it was never a Derby are simply trying to rewrite history to suit their agenda
You are obviously a fair bit older than me mate.

Born in Sunderland and went to my first match mid 80's, left school early 90's and worked in Washington until the mid 90's when I moved to Scotland so to be hosest it is maybe it is being away from the area for so long that I just don't see it as a proper derby and even when living down there it never felt like a derby to me. Maybe it's because I came into contact with far more filth than mutants. That's just my honest opionion in it mate and doesn't get me fired up in the same way as a derby with the filth, but I also get why other people will feel differently about it and that is there perogitive.

I think its a derby, but could never replace the Mags. Boro fans I have worked with have all been actual match attenders and are happy to crack on win lose or daw (the polar opposite of our entitled childish neighbours who only every talk football if they win).

Arsenal v Palace last week was described as a London derby so I definitely think Boro is.

When you play the mags the build up is for weeks and weeks before

Boro about a day before …. So for me not even close losing to them is no different to losing to Huddersfield

Boro is in Yorkshire, south of the Tees isn’t the North East.
Sorry mate, but you don't make the boundaries.
Going by your 'logic', then you could argue that south of the Tyne isn't north-east, as the Northumberland coast stretches up to the Scottish border.
Do we need to have this thread every single time we play them
I think it's called denial, and people being desperate to 'fit in' with the crowd.

Been done many times this. Imo yes. Just nowhere near as big as Mags. Although as they become a Saudi petro money club, being wholly state owned, that may change in next 25 years. And perhaps Boro game becomes more of an important traditional 'level playing field' big rivalry. Who knows.

It is laughable. As a boro fan obviously I know the derby is the mags against them massive no question at all .totally blows us out of the water a million times over.
But some of the loons on here saying its like playing Carlisle or Leicester. I've been going to boro v sunlun games for 50 years and from the reaction of sunlun fans at the games. It doesn't feel like that to me .
This thread pops up every year I've been on here
Internet era fans marra. Stupid enough to think no one realises that they’re getting their face saving in early for when we lose.

All boro fans I have met are good lads. Decent club. Whereas mags , fuck them.
This for me as well. Work in Stockton where there is a boro lad and a mag sit near me. Can talk to one sensibly about the weekend and who is only too happy to admit his team were shite. The other one is mouthy as fuck.

Can you guess which one supports who?

I’ve had stronger feelings about beating Wycombe than I have ever had for Boro

I’ve just never had mates growing up who supported Boro so there was never any rivalry built up in my head… I don’t think I went to teeside either till I was in my 20s. Genuinely just another club for me.

I particularly dislike them because most of their fans have seen them win a trophy and win loads of European games.

In contrast we haven’t had a pot to piss in for years and have been in League One.
